Rabbi's Message
7/6/2016  -  30 Sivan 5776

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend.

Join us at Temple Emek Shalom this coming Shabbat for two services filled with song and meaningful prayer. On Friday night, Shabbat Shira returns at 7:00 PM (with a mini text study beforehand on particular prayers within the Kabbalat Shabbat service at 6:30 PM). Saturday morning services begin at 9:00 AM with Torah study (we'll study the story of Korach and his rebellion) and continue at 10:00 AM with Shabbat morning services.

During both services this weekend we will be remembering the life of Elie Wiesel, (who died this past July 2nd), and the legacy he left on the Jewish world, and the world at large.

L'shalom,

Rabbi Joshua Boettiger

Catherine Coulson Memorial Tree
As Catherine's yahrzeit approaches, we would like to dedicate the Cedar of Lebanon tree that was planted in the South Garden to her memory. We envision creating a memorial forest with seating for quiet contemplation just outside the Sanctuary.  If you would like to be part of this effort, please send contributions to Temple Emek Shalom and mark Landscape Beautification Fund/Catherine Coulson Tree in the memo line.  Your donation will be acknowledged in the Newsletter, with gratitude. Thank you for helping to honor Catherine's  memory.
B'shalom,

Special Talk and Havdalah Ritual with Norman Fischer.
"Reading the Torah as a Poem", July 23
What could it mean to read the Torah as one reads a poem? How might this approach change how we read Torah? How might this approach change how we read poetry?
July 23, 7:00-8:30pm at Temple Emek Shalom. Free of charge - everyone welcome

DEADLINE APPROACHING TO REGISTER FOR
Imagination and the Spiritual Path
A Day Long Meditation Retreat with Norman Fischer, July 24  (deadline is July 15)
Join Norman for a day-long retreat looking at the spiritual path as a path of imagination. What is imagination? How do we exercise it? Who are we? Are we perhaps more sure of who we are than we should be? We'll examine the stories we tell ourselves and see if we can find more imaginative ones! The day will feature sitting and walking meditation, listening to teachings, and some writing and interaction.

Zoketsu Norman Fischer is a poet and Zen Buddhist priest. For many years he has taught at the San Francisco Zen Center, the oldest and largest of the new Buddhist organizations in the West, where he served as Co-abbot from 1995-2000. He is presently a Senior Dharma Teacher there as well as the founder and spiritual director of the Everyday Zen Foundation, an organization dedicated to adapting Zen Buddhist teachings to Western culture.

Casting Notice for Steven Spielberg Film - 6-9 Year Old Boy Needed
From the casting agency:
"ROLE "EDGARDO" - BOY age 6-9 to play a 6 year old. This is a unique and very challenging part for a truly special boy. The story deals with the complexity of an extremely intelligent and gifted child's situation - his desire to return to his family and the faith of his ancestors, pitted against his ability to learn the Catechism and engage with the Pope on a level far beyond his years. HE SHOULD APPEAR TO BE A JEWISH ITALIAN child. We are not looking for any kind of Italian accent. LEAD.

STORY LINE "The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara"- Steven Spielberg is making a film about the true story of EDGARDO MORTARA - a 6 year old Jewish boy from Bologna who was reported to have been secretly baptized by a maid, and was deemed by the Catholic church therefore to be Christian. Pope Pius IX (to be played by Mark Rylance) decreed that the boy could not remain with his Jewish family. He was seized by the Papal State and taken to the Vatican where his indoctrination into Catholicism began. This was a cause clbre of mid-nineteenth century European politics and the domestic and international outrage against the pontifical state's actions may have contributed to its downfall amid the unification of Italy. This is an incredible story of real historical relevance.

To submit: Email [email protected]. Subject line: EDGARDO SUBMISSION / Name of boy, city/state. Body of email: Parents/Guardians contact info (names/phone), boy's name/age/d.o.b, city/state of residence, along w/current non retouched photos. If you'd like to include a brief introduction, bio or resume, please do. Please note any related, special, or fun facts so we get to know him!"
