candleYahrzeit Candle
Lighting Prayer

For the love that death cannot sever, for the time we shared along life's path, for the gifts of heart and mind, we are grateful. Divine one, help us to understand that grief and love go hand in hand.

As we are made more aware of light by kindling this Yahrzeit candle, may we remember the light which (say the name) brought in the world.

Zich-ro-no(m) Zich-ro-nah(f) liv'ra-cha.
May his/her memory be for a blessing.

Message from Rabbi Boettiger
Happy July everybody!

I want to take a moment at the beginning of this message and name two things. One of them is my gratitude for Michael Schames' leadership these past four years. I think Michael has done a wonderful job as president, bringing our congregation forward into this next chapter of our lives. He has worked hard and served with both integrity, and with passion for Temple Emek Shalom and for Jewish life in our region. I'm very happy that he'll be remaining on the Board.

The second thing I want to do is to officially welcome Adie Goldberg as our next TES president! You'll get to read a message from Adie below. I'm thrilled that she is stepping into this role and feel very optimistic about our present and future as a congregation.

Please take a moment to contact both Michael and Adie and to thank/welcome them. Being president of a synagogue is difficult work. As my friend, Rabbi Steve Gutow put it when he was stepping down from his role as head of the Jewish Council of Public Affairs, and was asked if he was burned out from Jewish organizational work, laughed and said, "I'm not sick of the Jews...[we] are a tough row to hoe, though."

I know we are still in the throes of summer (may we stay there for as long as we possibly can!), but I wanted to announce some exciting news about how we will be kicking off this next congregational year. Saturday, September 24th Temple Emek Shalom will be having a day-long congregational retreat at the nearby retreat center of Buckhorn Springs here in Ashland. Some of you will remember TES retreats at Buckhorn from back in the day. Others of you have had the pleasure of being out there for other events and teachings--buckhornsprings.org. This day will be a chance to be together and celebrate Shabbat as a community. We hope all facets of our congregation will be attending, including elders, teens, Shul School families, Board members, meditators, atheists, mystics, Mussarniks, and more. The day will consist of prayer, two delicious Buckhorn meals (lunch and dinner), electives in the afternoon, and it will culminate in a special havdalah ceremony and Selichot service in the evening. We'll be sending full details on the day and registration information in the coming weeks, but please save the date and be part of this special retreat that will also serve as a nice launch to bring us into the High Holy Days season.

L'shalom,

Rabbi Joshua Boettiger

Message from Adie Goldberg, President
I am new to this beautiful community. It will be 5 years in August. I am grateful for all who have gone before me.

I have, however,  spent most of my life in one Jewish community or another. It would be easy to trick myself and say "I know organized Judaism." "I know that kind of person." "I've heard or tried that before."  Rabbi Jordan Bendatt-Appell wrote a shiur (a rabbinic lesson) on one of Rebbe Nachman of Bratslav's teachings. The Rebbe encourages us to see the Torah as a series of chambers one leading to another and that we should never think we've completely travelled the Torah's chambers because G-d forbid we will deprive ourselves of so much more learning.

Rabbi Bendatt-Appell teaches we need to apply the Rebbe's lesson to life. He encourages us to be open to learning, or the middah (Jewish virtue) Hitlamdut. Hitlamdut is the opportunity to be present for fully engaged curiosity.  As we join together this year crafting the next portion of Temple's story, my mantra will be" tell me more, teach me." I have reached out to some of you but work and finishing some final editing has kept me from following up in a way that I want to. So to those I've reached out to, thank you for your time. For those, I haven't finished following up with, I'm getting there. And for those I should be talking to but don't yet know I should, please stop me at shul and bend my ear, write me an email (adieleeg@gmail.com)  or call me at 509-939-0800 and leave me a message. I'm at the hospital during the days but I'll get back to you.

I'm open to learning; to hearing what you have appreciated most about your affiliation with Temple and to understand what you are hoping to find more of. I am practicing an on-going sense of "I don't know."

Enjoy your summer, eat your fruits and vegetables, stay hydrated and don't make yourself a stranger.

Warmly,
Adie

Catherine Coulson Memorial Tree
As Catherine's yahrzeit approaches, we would like to dedicate the Cedar of Lebanon tree that was planted in the South Garden to her memory. We envision creating a memorial forest with seating for quiet contemplation just outside the Sanctuary.  If you would like to be part of this effort, please send contributions to Temple Emek Shalom and mark Landscape Beautification Fund/Catherine Coulson Tree in the memo line.  Your donation will be acknowledged in the Newsletter, with gratitude. Thank you for helping to honor Catherine's  memory.

Deadline Approaching to Register for
Imagination and the Spiritual Path
A Day Long Meditation Retreat with Norman Fischer, July 24
Join Norman for a day-long retreat looking at the spiritual path as a path of imagination. What is imagination? How do we exercise it? Who are we? Are we perhaps more sure of who we are than we should be? We'll examine the stories we tell ourselves and see if we can find more imaginative ones! The day will feature sitting and walking meditation, listening to teachings, and some writing and interaction.

Zoketsu Norman Fischer is a poet and Zen Buddhist priest. For many years he has taught at the San Francisco Zen Center, the oldest and largest of the new Buddhist organizations in the West, where he served as Co-abbot from 1995-2000. He is presently a Senior Dharma Teacher there as well as the founder and spiritual director of the Everyday Zen Foundation, an organization dedicated to adapting Zen Buddhist teachings to Western culture.

Mitzvah Kitchen, July 28
The Mitzvah Kitchen continues and member Jerrine Rowley and her husband David are scheduled to.bake loaves of challah again on Thursday, July 28, in the Temple kitchen.  We ask you, our congregants, to contact the Rabbi or Kathy at 541-488-2909, so a challah can be delivered to you or a fellow congregant who is experiencing a special event or an illness in the family.  If you are to receive a challah and are not at home, the challah will be left in a sealed bag by your front door.  We hope that the challah that we provide will add to your Shabbat celebration or give you some comfort during a difficult time.
