Rabbi's Message
4/26/2016  - 18 Nisan 5776

If I am not for myself, who is for me? And if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when? (Pirkei Avot 1:14)

Our special Pirkei Avot series begins this Sunday, with the first class and teaching - "Moses received the Torah from Sinai: History and Context of Pirkei Avot" - led by Rabbi Vanessa Boettiger. Pirkei Avot is perhaps the most famous rabbinic text - a collection of powerful and foundational aphorisms such as the one above. Join Rabbi Vanessa at from 11:30 to 12:30 this Sunday at TES. (Copies of Pirkei Avot will be available to each participant. We will have a different guest teacher every week going forward.)

This weekend is also special for other reasons. We conclude the week of Passover with holiday and Shabbat services Saturday morning co-led by Rabbi Boettiger and Education Director/Cantorial Soloist candidate Sheryl (Shayndel) Adler, who will be visiting our community this weekend. The service on Saturday morning will also feature a Yizkor service (where we will be dedicating all the new Yahrzeit plaques).

Shayndel will be offering a teaching and leading Havdalah services Saturday evening from 7:30-8:30pm. Please come if you are able to both Saturday services. (She will also be leading the Family service for Shul School on Sunday morning, and stepping in as guest Judaics teacher for each class of children.)

Have a sweet rest of Pesach this week, and may this time live up to its name of being zman cheroteynu - the season of our freedom

 L'shalom,

Rabbi Joshua Boettiger

Study Pirkei Avot between Passover and Shavuot with a Different Guest Teacher Each Week!
Pirkei Avot ("Ethics of Our Fathers") is a famous rabbinic compilation with wonderful teachings, both pithy and profound, from the early rabbis. It is a text of timeless wisdom, and creates some of the bedrock for all Jewish ethical literature that follows. And - it is a tradition to study this work during the seven weeks between Passover and Shavuot. Seven separate teachers, both rabbis and laypeople, will take turns leading the learning on Sundays from 11:30AM-12:30PM here at Temple Emek Shalom.

Social Action Opportunities

Message from Evie Strauss, Co-Chair, Social Justice Action Committee

"Did you know that April is "Child Abuse Prevention Month?" Did you know that three great organizations -- Children's Advocacy Center, CASA and the Family Nurturing Center -- are having a special fund drive to raise money for their programs that benefit abused children?  They are putting out collection jars all over the Rogue Valley, including one at TES. Please put your "spare change" in the jar on the lobby table. You can even put in bills: ones, fives, tens are all welcome!!

Then in May, Tami, the Executive Director of the Children's Advocacy Center, will tell us more about what this partnership is doing for the abused children in Jackson County. Please plan to come to the May 7th Shabbat services.

Thank you!"
