Shul School November 8 November 22 Adult Education
Ean Roby, Professor Emeritus at Ohlone College, continues his fascinating class of ancient history that speaks to us today: "At the Mercy of Strangers: Ancient Israel and Her Neighbors."
These lectures investigate the history of ancient Israel from the entry into the land until the great rebellions in the Roman period, and explore the different relationships which Israel had with neighboring powers and how those relationships led to significant historical consequences. The class examines the Philistines and how David was able to eventually overcome them. Similarly, when turning to the later Assyrians and Babylonians, we encounter a dramatically different situation, one which eventually leads to deportation of the ten northern tribes and, later, to the Babylonian exile. Attendees are learning of the two centuries of peaceful Persian rule, the subsequent Selucid kingdom (whose provocations sparked rebellion and the establishment of a new Jewish state), and the era of ever-tightening Roman control. Taken together, these lectures provide a deeper appreciation of ancient Jewish history.
Whether you've attended the first classes or not, all are invited to join in at any point. There is still one fascinating lecture in this series to enjoy.
Ean Roby's adult education classes at OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Southern Oregon University) on the history of Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Indian Religions (except Buddhism), and Ancient Greek philosophy and history are very popular and fill up quickly. If you're one of those who has tried to attend and was told the class was already full, here's your chance to enjoy an informative and lively program at TES.
This class meets in the TES conference room on Wednesday, with one remaining class: November 4, 7:15 PM - 8:45 PM.
Thursday at the Movies
With two down and two to go, the Thursday Night at the Movies series resumes on November 12th with "Witness for the Prosecution," based on Agatha Christie's play and starring Tyrone Power. Nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Motion Picture, the film is another example of writer-director Billy Wilder's finest work.
In its review of the film, the New York Times called Wilder's courtroom scenes "splendid and splintering" and credited much of the film's triumph to the "first-rate performance" by Charles Laughton.
At the conclusion of the screening, TES member Ron Silverman will lead yet another exciting, informative discussion of the film and of Wilder himself.

Yahrzeit Candle Lighting Prayer
|
For the love that death cannot sever, for the time we shared along life's path, for the gifts of heart and mind, we are grateful. Divine one, help us to understand that grief and love go hand in hand.
As we are made more aware of light by kindling this Yahrzeit candle, may we remember the light which (say the name) brought in the world.
Zich-ro-no(m) Zich-ro-nah(f) liv'ra-cha. May his/her memory be for a blessing.

Message from Rabbi Boettiger
|
It's not quite "Four score and seven years ago," but roughly thirteen years ago, we moved into this amazing building, which has become Temple Emek Shalom's home. That would make 2015-2016 our bat mitzvah year. A bat mitzvah is, at its root, a coming of age ceremony. Sometimes we think that maturity and adulthood is something that just happens. The noted French-Jewish philosopher Emmanuel Levinas said that this was not the case. Maturity and adulthood is something that one comes into as soon as one realizes that one is responsible for his fellow. When we learn to let concern for the other be our primary orientation, we become adults.
I like to think of this as the goal with any bar or bat mitzvah, and I think it also translates to our building's coming of age. While our congregation is older than our building (there are different origin stories floating around, but most locate 1973 as our birth year), in many ways we have come of age as a congregation in relationship to our building. The lay and rabbinic leadership that was exhibited in the fundraising years was phenomenal. It was an extraordinary time in Temple Emek Shalom's history, and there was such goodwill and community connection in abundance. If there hadn't been, the capital campaign would not have worked.
And here we are. Some of you were here in those years, and if so, it is you who we are honoring as one of the "builders" on November 13th-14th. If you're like me, you were not yet in the Rogue Valley, or at least not yet connected to Temple Emek Shalom. A rabbinic colleague of mine, who was visiting TES recently, expressed it well: "You mean this was all just here when you arrived? Wow. Lucky you." Lucky us. For those of us who have come to the community in these last thirteen years, we are truly blessed to have a sacred space such as this one. And there are steps we can take to not only show our gratitude, but to further ensure that we can keep our physical space (and by extension our community itself) strong and well-maintained. There are ways we can do this that we will announce in the coming weeks and months.
A first step, though, is to honor the builders - and that is why we are hoping that everyone of you will join us for this special Bat Mitzvah weekend of November 13th-14th. The festivities will begin with Shabbat Shira on Friday, November 13th at 7:00pm. The Kirtan Rabbi, Andrew Hahn, will be sitting in with Chazzan Bella and our musicians for a couple of songs (he is performing at a concert at the Havurah on Saturday Night). Saturday morning, November 14th at 10:00am will be the Bat Mitzvah itself. It will be a service of song, and stories; gratitude and celebration - both looking back and looking forward. Tony Heald and Rabbi Ken Ehrlich will be our featured speakers. Because we want to encourage you to come - and because we need numbers to give to our caterer for lunch afterwards! - please RSVP by November 5th to let Kathy know if you can come ( [email protected] or 541-488-2909).
Join me in celebrating not only this space, but the people who have made this space possible.
With blessing,
Rabbi Joshua Boettiger

Message from Bikkur Holim Committee There's an old adage that goes something like "the more you do, the more energy you have." Maybe it's really just "the more you do, the more you do."
Harriet and Leah are appealing to you to consider the issue of more. Specifically, we are talking about more service; we're asking you to join the Bikkur Holim committee. We visit members who are ill or homebound, we provide meals to congregants recovering from illness, surgeries, or births, we send cards, we check on how members of our TES community are doing, we offer support, contact, connection. You know you get as much or more than you give when you are open to the needs of others. We are asking that you look inside yourself and see if you can imagine adding this to your life, even if it is just to be on a list to provide meals. If the response is yes, or if you have more questions about this, please email Leah Saturen at [email protected]. We would love to draw in a few members from Josephine County and in that effort, plan to switch our meeting times to a Sunday every other month to coincide with Shul School. Thank you for your consideration.
Day of Mindfulness, November 7, led by Alexa Singer Telles, co-sponsored by Temple Emek Shalom & Havurah Shir Hadash Please RSVP by end of day November 4th
A day of rest and restoration: mindful sitting and walking meditation, deep relaxation, Dharma, Torah and Petry, mindful conversation. Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Havurah, 9:30AM - 4:00PM, Sliding Scale: $30-$45, vegetarian lunch included. Alexa writes: "Dear Friends, I am delighted to be coming to Ashland to share a day of mindfulness with your community. As some of you know, I have been weaving together Jewish and Buddhist practices for many years and find they enrich each other greatly. The inspiration for this event includes bringing our spiritual communities together - the Havurah, the Temple, TES meditation groups and the Plum village meditation communities- to experience connectivity, beauty and peace. I've been exploring the interconnection between a day of mindfulness and Shabbat and find them completely in synch with each other. I will also be sharing the unique practices that Thich Nhat Hanh has developed to deepen our sense of the beloved community. Consider giving yourself this day to nourish yourself and experience the joy of practicing with friends in your Ashland community." Please register in advance by November 4, by contacting the Havurah office at 541-488-7716 or [email protected].
The Beauty of Our Lives, November 8
The TES Sisterhood Committee invites you to a special Sunday morning event of ritual, creativity, and community for women. Inspired by the week's Torah portion, "Sarah's Life", we will gather together to explore the wisdom of our own lives through meditation, SoulCollage (r), and a circle of sharing. SoulCollage (r) is a creative arts process of cutting and pasting images that call to you, creating a collaged card, and expressing the voice of the card in writing and speaking to offer you insight, inspiration, and support for your own life. As a group we will then honor the many facets of women's lives in a sacred circle.
Alexa Singer-Telles is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, a Dharma Teacher in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh and Plum Village, and a registered SoulCollage (r) Facilitator. She is a member of Temple Beth Israel in Redding and honors and expresses her Jewish roots in her teaching. Her workshops weave meditation, expressive arts and women's spirituality together for community building, self exploration and reflection. She discovered SoulCollage (r) as a way "to bring the beauty of spirit into form." Please contact Alexa with any questions at [email protected]. Sunday, November 8, 10:30am-1:00pm, snacks provided. Cost: TES & Havurah Members $25 / Non-members $30 Please contact the TES office at 541-488-2909 or [email protected] to register. Pre-registration is required as space is limited. Shabbat Shirah, November 13, 7:00PMJoin Rabbi Joshua, Chazzan Bella and the Shabbat Shirah musicians for a lively Shabbat Shirah, followed by dessert potluck. Special guest Rabbi Andrew Hahn, the Kirtan Rabbi. See flyer below for details.
Temple Emek Shalom's Synagogue Bat Mitzvah Celebration, November 14
As we are approaching our bat mitzvah year at 1800 E. Main, we plan to celebrate with a special bat mitzvah ceremony on Saturday morning, November 14th at 10:00AM honoring those who made the building possible. Our ceremony will be followed by a festive catered lunch.
In addition to a beautiful Shabbat morning service with prayers, singing, and Torah, we will have two special speakers: longtime TES member and renowned actor, Tony Heald; and new TES member and former Dean at Hebrew Union College's Cincinnati Campus, Rabbi Kenneth Ehrlich. They will provide both an historical perspective as we honor our builders, and a look towards the future as we look to build an even more stable community.
Mark your calendars and please join us in giving thanks. If you are able to make a donation towards the cost of the luncheon, that would be greatly appreciated. RSVPs must be received by Thursday, November 5th. Please contact the TES office at (541) 488-2909 or [email protected] so we can plan for correct number of guests. Todah rabah! Kirtan Rabbi's Hebrew kirtans tend to use niggunim and zemirot (tunes and songs) which already feel familiar - even if you've never heard them before! He uses the kirtan form - call-and-response - in traditional Jewish modes of notation. These are drawn from both European and Eastern sources, as well as from contemporary composers. He also tends to set the chants in non-Western modalities. Kirtan Rabbi plays a harmonium and uses it as a kind of movable background drone.
Along with the music, Rabbi Hahn will pepper the workshop with helpful meditation techniques learned from his martial arts practice, along with short teachings, which explain the source and meaning of the language. For more details and to register for the workshop, go to stclairevents.com or call (541) 535-3562.
