Rabbi's Message

7/30/2015  -  14 Av 5775

This week, for Saturday morning services, we will have a special addition to the liturgy. As we have done in the past, TES member Julia Sommer will be playing cello both while people come into the sanctuary, and again during an extended amida (standing silent prayer) midway through the service.

A few years ago, Rabbi Zalman Shachter-Shalomi, z"l, urged me to have music playing when people came into the sanctuary (this is something he routinely suggested to pulpit rabbis, along with other practical advice he would give us - such as having people daven in English more often, or during prayer to try speaking to G-d as you would a close friend). Reb Zalman would teach about how just the act of hearing music, such as Mozart, when you come into the sanctuary, does wonders for helping people recognize that they are entering a sacred space/time, and also helping people transition into the act of prayer itself - which is really a necessity. The sages of old used to sit for an hour before beginning prayer, then pray for an hour, then sit for an hour after prayer. Prayer is not something one can just begin and end abruptly.

Saturday morning is also a Shabbat Simcha and we know there will be at least a few special birthdays being celebrated. Come ready to eat cake (and also bring a potluck dish to share for lunch).

With hopes that everyone is having a wonderful summer -

L'shalom,

Rabbi Joshua Boettiger

All are joyfully invited to celebrate Ilan's Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, August 8, with kiddush luncheon to follow.  Please RSVP to Steve Werblow at [email protected] by July 31.

Ilan describes his mitzvah project below:

"For my Mitzvah Project I am talking to people who know the history of the Hungarian Jewish community. I am also raising money to help re-publish a book that tells stories of the Budapest Jews. I choose this because I like books and I wanted to do something to help the Hungarian Jewish community. When I went over to Hungary I noticed that there were a lot of things that need to be restored. The title of the book is
Stories in the Stones - Literary walks around Budapest's Jewish Quarter."

Ilan will be collecting donations to forward to help re-publish the book. Donors can also donate directly at http://www.memento70.hu/project/stories-in-the-stones-literary-walks-around-budapests-jewish/

Thursday at the Movies

A new film series, "Thursday Night at the Movies," gets underway on August 13 at 7:00pm with a screening of the classic film, "Sunset Boulevard," which will be followed by a discussion led by TES member Ron Silverman, a retired film producer who was Dean at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles.

Ron led a similar series ten years ago at the Temple, an activity that filled the Conference Room a dozen times with films such as "Frisco Kid," "Gentlemen's Agreement," and "The Way We Were."

When TES' Adult Ed. committee asked Ron if he would offer another film series, he told us that he is doing a series of films by director Billy Wilder at the Rogue Valley Manor.  We're delighted to have the advantage of seeing this series and hearing Ron before the Manor presentations.

Following "Sunset Boulevard" will be "The Apartment" on September 10, "Witness for the Prosecution" on November 12, and "Some Like It Hot" on December 10.  All screenings will start at 7:00pm, and the Conference Room is limited to the first 50 people who attend.

Click here for a printable flyer with all the dates and details or see below.
