Helpers Needed at Casino Night, April 18

One-Hour Shifts Available!

Dear Chaverim and Possible New Volunteers,

Our TES Casino Night with live auction was a great success last year with many thanks due to all of you!  Todah Rabbah!

It is now time to to secure workers for this year's event on April 18th.

We need 50 / 50 and Wine Raffle sellers. These tables will be next to one another in the lobby so are perfect for a couple or individuals.  There are no roving sales this year.

We need 2 sharp cashiers each shift - one at a table and one standing in the gaming pits.

Prize table will be supervised by Helen Reinhold.  Two sharp and friendly helpers are needed here for each shift.

Wheel of Fortune was lots of fun and very popular last year.  We need one enthusiastic, fun person there for each shift.

We need one or two at the beer bar.

Roving Runners collect signature sheets from raffle tables, cashiers, prize table, and auction every 15 minutes during their hour. We need one person per hour except there should be 2 during the live auction.

At the check out from 8:00 through 9:30pm two helpers are needed.  This involves getting the items out on the cashier table so that check out moves quickly.

And last, but certainly not least, we need 2 parking lot directors at the very beginning of the evening.

Please respond as quickly as possible to get your first choice of job and time.  Time slots, in most cases, are 5;15 - 6:15,  6:15 till 7:15,  live auction 7:15 till 8:00 and 8:00 till 9:00 or 9:30 pm.

Shalom,
Annette Fried

Israel - past and present through a personal perspective, Repeat Performance!

For those who missed any of the presentations, TES Member Emanuel Ben-David will present once more, in a series of 3 gatherings, the story of Israel and the Israeli people from his own personal experience. To be held at the Havurah Shir Hadash, three Sunday afternoons from 2:00 - 3:00 PM:

April 5: Introduction and weaving the personal story with the Nation's history

April 19: The Ten "Commandments" that make up the typical Israeli

May 3:  A journey in the world of Israel's Defense (and not just...) Technology

Emanuel will examine the characteristics of the "typical" Israeli, (and by extension the country at large), through looking at some of the driving forces and origins of who Israelis are and how they came to be that way. He will do this through a broad review of the recent history (last 100 years or so) of the Jews in Israel and elsewhere.  The story will also be tightly connected to Emanuel and his family's personal experience. Once the foundation is established, he will teach on some of Israel's technological successes.

Shmita (Sabbatical Year) Exploration Group
Next Meeting - Tuesday, April 14th at 4pm, TES
In the Jewish calendar, every 7th year is a shmita year, a time of release of many routine practices. Amongst other things, Jewish law states that the land should be left to lie fallow and debts released. We are currently in a shmita year - what relevance does this practice have in our modern life?

We will be exploring this question on a monthly basis, until next Rosh Hashana when the new seven year cycle begins. We will look at it through the lens of Jewish text, through personal experience, and through what it could mean for our community at large. This is a joint endeavor of the Havurah and Temple Emek Shalom.

Our next meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 14th at 4pm at TES. Please join us, even if you were unable to make prior meetings.

We are rotating facilitation throughout the group, and this session Stephanie Baum will be looking at the topic of debt relief - "A Radical Question of Debt: From Jewish Law to Modern Reality." All levels welcome.

Community Yom HaShoah Observance, April 15
On April 15th at 7:00pm here at TES we will be observing Yom HaShoah jointly with the Havurah.

Israel: Speaking Across Conflict
A Shabbaton with Rabbi Melissa Weintraub and Eyal Rabinovitch
Co-Sponsored by Temple Emek Shalom and Havurah Shir Hadash
June 5-7, 2015

Temple Emek Shalom and the Havurah are thrilled to co-sponsor a special weekend featuring renowned educators and facilitators Rabbi Melissa Weintraub and Eyal Rabinovitch. This is not an event for the left; this is not an event for the right - simply put, it is an important and unique event for all those in our Jewish community here in Ashland.

Rabbi Melissa Weintraub is a noted educator who trains leaders and builds programs at the intersections of Israel, Jewish thought and conflict resolution. A mediator, facilitator, coach, and trainer, Eyal Rabinovitch supports individuals and communities to defuse tension, communicate directly, and build collaboration and problem-solving. Together, Melissa and Eyal co-direct JCPA's Resetting the Table: Building Dialogue, Deliberation and Civility on Israel.

There will be more information forthcoming soon about the details of the weekend and how to register. For now, save the date!
