Rabbi's Message

10/7/14  - 13 Tishri 5775

Wow. I feel great gratitude for our TES community in the wake of our high holy day services. Thanks to everyone who participated in some way through reading Torah, helping with the break fast, doing a shift with the candles over the night of kol nidrei, providing home-harvested honey, offering poems, setting up, cleaning up, getting up Sunday morning to build the sukkah, and more. Thank you to everyone who showed up with such presence to pray, sing, experience, and bring in the New Year together. Let's keep it rolling into Sukkot.

 L'shalom,

Marilyn Borkin is pleased to invite the Congregation to attend the Sukkot service on October 11th at 10:00 am, when her granddaughter, Penelope Ana, will receive her Hebrew name and a special blessing.  Everyone is invited to a hosted oneg sponsored by Marilyn Borkin and Bill Harris after the service.  A potluck lunch in the Sukkah is already scheduled and any menu additions would be a welcome

Book Talk, October 21
This coming spring, 40 Emek Shalom-ers will be traveling to Israel together. One of the ways we are preparing is by reading Yossi Klein HaLevi's excellent new book, Like Dreamers. You don't have to be coming to Israel to read the book and join the travelers for a discussion on October 21st at 7:00pm in the TES Library.

Artist of the Month

Avinoam Zohar's glasswork is now featured in the TES Showcase. The Showcase contains a wide variety of different types of hand blown glass and fused glass. Come look at the beautiful menorah, a myriad of mezuzot, holiday plates and bowls, and more. All these glass pieces glow from within, infused with light.

Zohar Glassworks creates hand-crafted, collectible Art Glass Creations, specializing in functional and unique contemporary work and exquisite Judaica. The essence of Art Glass is "Zohar" meaning "light, radiance, and luminescence" in Hebrew.

Zohar Glassworks is proud to have work displayed in many galleries and private collections across the United States, Canada, Europe and Israel. They specialize in using the highest quality materials and workmanship, allowing their glassworks to be passed down, generation to generation.

Message from Sasha Borenstein on new Beginning Hebrew Class to start Oct. 12

"I am so excited by the response to the Hebrew 101 class.  We will begin our classes Oct. 12th, after the Shul School service at 10:45am.  Our class will go for an hour and 15 minutes, so we will be finished at noon.  We will have classes through the spring, mirroring the Shul School calendar, except we will add a few classes in December and January so we stick to our twice a month sessions.

As I put the order in for our learning materials, I found out that they will cost more than what we paid last year, therefore, I am asking that each participant pay $50 for the course and the materials.  Please be prepared to pay for the class on Oct. 12 with either a check made out to Temple Emek Shalom or cash.

Each class will also focus on one prayer for the morning prayers, so you will be learning the meaning and kavanot of the prayers as well as how to read them."

If you have any questions or would like to sign up for the class, please contact Sasha at [email protected].

Social Action Opportunities

Volunteers Needed for Ashland Emergency Food Bank
The time is fast approaching for TES to provide volunteers to staff the Emergency Food Bank for the months of November and December.

Volunteers will attend an orientation at the end of October, and form teams of two people to work from 9:15 am-12:30 pm once per week for eight weeks. If you are interested in serving in this vital capacity, please contact Pat O'Scannell  at [email protected]. Your contribution will be greatly rewarded, as you receive back tenfold in gratitude and satisfaction as you observe the need and the appreciation of those you serve. Truly an exceptional opportunity for a mitzvah, and a chance to work with others who give from the heart. --- Pat O'Scannell, co-chair of the Social Justice Action Committee and representative to the AEFB Board.

It's Winter Shelter Organizing Time!
The Social Justice and Action Committee welcomes volunteers for this winter's homeless shelter project. The shelter needs volunteers willing to stay the night, and volunteers willing to assist with morning clean up. Please attend one of the upcoming trainings to learn more. Trainings will happen on Mon., Oct.13 and Weds., Nov.5, both at  7:00pm at the Presbyterian Church. Shelter and training are an interfaith effort.  Call John Wieczorek at 541-482-8230 with any questions.

TES's Annual High Holy Days Food Drive continues! Let's keep those cases of food coming!

Temple Emek Shalom made a large and admirable effort last year in donations, but the numbers served at the Food Bank have jumped dramatically. Whereas we served approximately 250 shoppers per month, we now serve 600 families on average per month. Despite the Herculean efforts of the Ashland Food Project and other community resources, we are not able to keep our shelves full.

It is imperative that Temple Emek Shalom really rally this year of all years to help provide the Food Bank with vital and central food items such as cooking oils, nut butters, hearty soups, and tuna. We would add to this list fresh and frozen meats and fishes, organic if possible.  Think big: buy in bulk and take advantage of sales and coupons.

Please bring your goods by the TES lobby during normal business hours (Tues.-Fri.,10:00am-4:00pm), or take them directly to the Ashland Emergency Food Bank at 560 Clover Lane (across from the Holiday Inn Express) from 9:30am-12:30pm, Monday through Friday.  Thank you!!
