Rabbi's Message

9/9/14  - 14 Elul 5774

It's hard to describe what Musar is. It's a movement within Judaism focused on ethical consciousness and practice that began in Lithuania in the 19th century, but is being re-discovered today. Maybe it's easier to describe Musar by naming some of its most fundamental questions : How can we be more awake to the needs of the other? How can we cultivate a mindfulness that trains us to be better able to respond to the needs of the moment? How can we live lives of deep service? How do we engage with the level of pain in the world without burning out or going to sleep? Our inaugural Musar group here at TES was a wonderful success last year, with eighteen committed participants who are continuing their work into this coming year. Because we had a waiting list (and more interest expressed since), we are beginning a new Musar cohort, to start after the High Holy Days, in mid-October. Because of the commitment involved (eight months) and the nature of the work, if you are interested in hearing more or in signing up, please contact me directly and we can set up a time to talk about the class - [email protected].

Our first Eat, Pray, Sing family potluck is this Friday evening at 5:30pm. This is also an outreach event to families considering coming to Shul School here at Temple Emek Shalom, so if you know of families with children who may be interested - please help spread the word! The actual first day of school will be Sunday, September 21st.

The other thing that is happening this Friday - beginning after Eat, Pray, Sing at 7:00pm - is our first Shabbat Shirah of the Fall. Come pray and sing, and also stay after for a dessert spread honoring TES member Morgan Hunt's conversion to Judaism!

The Mitzvah Kitchen

We wish to introduce a new program called "The Mitzvah Kitchen." Started by new member Jerrine Rowley, together with member Sara Glasser, the Mitzvah Kitchen will make challot in the TES Kitchen (and possibly cookies, soup, or other treats) on a Thursday once a month to deliver to congregants who are experiencing a simcha in their family's life--a birth, engagement, wedding, graduation, or illness, hospitalization, death, etc.--and we ask you, our congregants, to contact the Rabbi or Kathy at 541-488-2909 so a challah can be delivered to you or a fellow congregant.

The Mitzvah Kitchen is scheduled on the following dates: Thursdays, September 18, October 23, November 13, and December 11.

If you would like to bake with Jerrine & Sara, please let us know and you are welcome to join them at 10 am!  If you would like to deliver the challot to your fellow congregants, please let us know and arrive at the temple by 2:30 pm.  If you are to receive a challah and are not at home, the food can be left in a sealed bag by your front door.  We hope that the challah or other treat that we will provide will add to your Shabbat celebration or give you some comfort during a difficult time.

Writers' Workshop at TES, September 14, 2014
Writing the Jewish Experience with Willa Schneberg

Participants will explore in our own words what we consider the Jewish experience. In this generative workshop, works by Gerald Stern, Adrienne Rich, Philip Schultz, Grace Paley, Yuvi Zalkov and others will be considered as motivations for writing our individual experiences of what it means to be Jewish.  Willa Schneberg is an Oregon Book Award winner and has authored five poetry collections. In 2015, Willa will offer readings and workshops throughout Israel as a guest of "Voices Israel: A Group of Poets who write in English."

Sunday, September 14, 11:00AM - 3:00PM. Cost is $60 (includes coffee, tea & snacks. Participants provide their own lunch.)  To register or for more information, please contact Jonah Bornstein at 541-531-0671 or [email protected].  See flyer below for more info or click here for printable flyer.

Jewish Genealogy Sources, Tuesday, September 16, 1:30-3:30 PM

Sara Weber invites everyone to a genealogy education program at the Jackson County Genealogy Library in South Medford, located 10 minutes from Ashland at 3405 S. Pacific Hwy (Highway 99), phone: 541-512-2340.   One of seven speakers, Sara will present a few examples of mysteries solved or almost solved and rich Jewish sources to help in the hunt for our ancestors' records and stories.  An impressive quantity of Jewish sources exist to get you started on your quest or send you hunting in new directions to answer that stubborn question or check out an old family story.

It's part of the Genealogy Library's "Tell Us What You Found" program.  Some other topics are: A beginner's journey, local WW II vet shadow box, two research methods for finding records of specific ancestors.  The library will stay open longer that evening for your use after the talks.  Call or write Sara for more information: 541 535-2018; [email protected],  Jackson County Genealogy Library Website: rvgslibrary.org

Social Action Opportunities
TES's Annual High Holy Days Food Drive has started! Let's keep those cases of food coming!

It's hard to believe that another whole year has passed since we last put our energies together to help defeat the problem of hunger in our Valley. Temple Emek Shalom made a large and admirable effort in the donations category, but how were we to know that the numbers of the needy would jump so dramatically? Whereas we served approximately 250 shoppers per month last year at this time, we now serve 600 families on average per month. It is not hard to imagine that despite the Herculean efforts of the Ashland Food Project and other community resources, we are not able to keep our shelves full.

It is imperative that Temple Emek Shalom really rally this year of all years to help provide the Food Bank with vital and central food items such as cooking oils, nut butters, hearty soups, and tuna. We would add to this list fresh and frozen meats and fishes, organic if possible.

Now is the time to think big:  buy canned goods by the case on sale, dare your friends to catch more fish, then have a cleaning party and donate the fish to the AEFB. Buy a side of beef, and donate to the food bank. Buy a crate of frozen chickens, and donate them to the food bank. Buy something bulk. Shampoos, conditioners, soaps and other hygienic products are gratefully accepted.

Please bring your goods by the TES lobby during normal business hours (Tues.-Fri.,10:00am-4:00pm), or take them directly to the Ashland Emergency Food Bank at 560 Clover Lane (across from the Holiday Inn Express) from 9:30am-12:30pm, Monday through Friday.  Thank you!!
