candleYahrzeit Candle
Lighting Prayer
For the love that death cannot sever, for the time we shared along life's path, for the gifts of heart and mind, we are grateful. Divine one, help us to understand that grief and love go hand in hand.

As we are made more aware of light by kindling this Yahrzeit candle, may we remember the light which (say the name) brought in the world.

  Message from Rabbi Boettiger
The Beautiful Game

If you have not found me in my study at the synagogue recently (during times when I normally am around) there's a good chance that I'm at Louie's or the Red Zone sneaking in an hour or two of World Cup Soccer.

There's a saying: rugby is a hooligan's game played by gentlemen, while soccer is a gentlemen's game played by hooligans. For the casual soccer fan watching the Cup, this might seem self-evident (at least the hooligan part) watching Uruguay's Luiz Suarez getting kicked out for biting (it was his third such offense), or reading the many articles taking host Brazil (and FIFA) to task for building colossal stadiums while the majority of their populace lives in great poverty without access to basic necessities. When we were in Brazil last month, many members of Vanessa's family talked about how the prospect of hosting the World Cup had been dulled for most of the country because of all the protests against corruption in government. But then something happened once the soccer started. Brazil has fallen back in love with the game and this past weekend's tension filled match-up with Chile evoked extreme angst among the faithful. Every few moments we received texts from Rio, which said, "I'm panicking!" or, "We're losing our Cup!" And then, once the dust had settled, "Goooooooooooooooooal!" and "Ganhamos!" (We won!).

It's easy to be cynical or critical about sports and how they distract us to no end, allowing us sometimes to overlook the real issues and concerns of life (poverty, etc.). And yet sports also allows us a particular access to something pure, something emotional and very human that does seem to unite us - "The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat" as the old Wide World of Sports slogan went. And the amount of people watching the World Cup across the globe dwarfs the number of those who watch the Olympics. Sitting down to watch a match, I imagine I am feeling what those who watched sitcoms in the 1960s felt (and what we can't feel today with DVR and three thousand channels) - I'm really sitting down with the whole country and sharing this experience. Except we are sitting down with the whole world - even if we sometimes have to watch a little biting.

Of course not everyone has taken to the sport: Ann Coulter has said American's growing interest in soccer "is a sign of the nation's moral decay." Pope Francis, who is Argentinian, has assured Catholics in Brazil that he will remain neutral in his rooting interests. I don't know if the Chief Rabbinate has shared whom they are rooting for, but I don't think it matters because we don't believe in the same kind of intercessionary powers that Catholicism does. Enjoy the quarterfinals and the spectacular human energy. And let's hope that the Cup draws attention to the really important issues that ultimately define us - they shouldn't be mutually exclusive.

Upcoming Special Events & Announcements
Message of Gratitude from Gabe Young

To the TES Community,

For those of you who were not in attendance at the May Shabbat Shirah, I would like to express similar words of gratitude as I did that night. Growing up in Ashland as a member of the TES community has been an incredible treat and blessing. I have experienced nothing but overwhelming love and support from all of you ever since I can remember (and even before that, according to all the stories of my dad bringing me to torah study as an infant). I have felt this support more than anything else in regards to my music. At nearly every single function that I played at over the years, I could count on at least a couple of TES members to be in attendance. Knowing that my music is so well appreciated by all of you has given me the inspiration to push forward with my musical studies and to be the best musician that I can be. Thank you for supporting me; it has been an honor and a pleasure to play for you over the years.

In the fall, I will begin at Indiana University, Jacobs School of Music, as a Wells Scholar and oboe performance major. Though I will focus on the performance side of music, I will still find time to develop my interest in composition. This will be made possible through the kindness of the community, having gifted me the Sibelius notation software as a graduation present. Thank you all for your generosity. Despite being far away, I will be back on holidays and summers and will continue to play music for this community whenever possible. Being a part of this community has shaped me in many ways.

Thank you again for everything.
All the best,
Gabe Young
