ShulschoolShul School

The History of Jewish Poetry

According to Stephen Paul Miller, "all poetry is Jewish." Join Rabbi Boettiger for this four session class where we'll trace Jewish poetry from the psalms of King David, to the ribald medieval wine/women/death poems of Andalusian Spain, to the heyday of Yiddish poetry, to Yehuda Amichai and modern/ contemporary poetry in Israel and the U.S. We'll not only work with particular poems and poets, but also explore poetry as a phenomenon in Judaism and Jewish life and history. Thursday evenings ( June 5th and June 12th) from 6:30-7:45pm (child care available on site). All are welcome. Non-member fee of $10 per session.

Office Closure

Mazel Tov!

Gabe Young

Gabe Young, one of our own Shabbat Shirah musicians, was one of four very talented Oregon high school musicians honored by the Oregon Music Hall of Fame (OMHOF) recently.

OMHOF's annual college scholarship award ceremony and performance celebration featured large checks and mini-concerts from the award recipients. Mazel tov, Gabe!

Noah Slater

Noah Slater, son of Asha Slater and Sari Telpner, and Grandson of Maynard and Sally Telpner, has been selected to receive the Taiwan Huayu  2014 Enrichment Scholarship.

In Noah's words: "Basically, the Taiwanese government will be funding me to study Mandarin in Taiwan for six months starting in September. Unbelievable. Words can't even begin to describe how happy I am right now! 我這個九月要去台南的成功大學學習中文。我太激動了!"

Noah graduates from The University of Oregon this June with a degree in Linguistics.  Mazel tov, Noah!

candleYahrzeit Candle
Lighting Prayer
For the love that death cannot sever, for the time we shared along life's path, for the gifts of heart and mind, we are grateful. Divine one, help us to understand that grief and love go hand in hand.

As we are made more aware of light by kindling this Yahrzeit candle, may we remember the light which (say the name) brought in the world.

Zich-ro-no(m) Zich-ro-nah(f) liv'ra-cha.
May his/her memory be for a blessing.

  Message from Rabbi Boettiger

I am just back from what was an amazing Shul School Shabbat Retreat weekend at Siskiyou Field Institute in the Illinois River Valley - where Shul School families camped, hiked, swam, davenned, hung out, and ate lasagna min hashamayim (from the heavens) together. To me, it was a perfect example of Judaism in real time: a chance to spend Shabbat in a beautiful, spacious setting, connecting, playing, and deepening friendships.

We are also coming out of a productive and spirited Annual Congregational Meeting (which happened last week). As we took stock of where we are as a congregation - celebrating our wonderful rise in membership and all of the activities and happenings at TES - I was aware that community really solidifies when we get to know one another and care about one another. Otherwise, we're just spinning our wheels. And more than anything else that was attested to at the meeting, I'm proud of that continuing and emergent reality: that we are building relationships here at TES in real time. That we are a community that takes care of one another.

We call our all night study session on the eve of Shavuot - tikkun leyl Shavuot, literally the "mending/healing that takes place on the night of Shavuot." What is being mended? On one hand, Judaism holds that Torah study has tremendous power - even more than prayer - and in mysterious ways it can help bring about transformation in the greater cosmos. On another level, when we learn together, when we can bring our full multi-faceted selves into synagogue, into Jewish community, and learn Torah - there is a healing in our being welcomed and in our welcoming others. Join us this Tuesday night for tikkun leyl Shavuot, and join us going forward into this summer.

L'shalom,

Rabbi Boettiger

A Day of Training in Compassion with Norman Fischer, Sunday, June 22, 9:00am - 5:00pm

TES is pleased to host this daylong workshop which will offer practical exercises for reducing self-centeredness, which comes so naturally to us, yet causes so much pain, and developing compassion.  We will practice silent
and guided meditations, comtemplate teachings and engage in discussion and imaginarive exercises designed to soften the mind and heart, and give us practical tools for continuing the process in our busy daily lives.

Norman Fischer is an American Soto Zen roshi, poet and Buddhist author. He was previously director at Green Gulch Farm in Marin County, California, and co-abbot of the San Francisco Zen Center. Fischer is a proponent of inter-religious dialogue between the worlds' religions. Fischer has also stayed in touch with his Jewish heritage, occasionally attending services at Beth Sholom synagogue in San Francisco and offering instruction in meditation to interested parties there.

Registration fee is $40, and includes a delicious catered vegan lunch. Please contact the TES office at (541) 488-2909 or [email protected] for more details or to register.
