candleYahrzeit Candle
Lighting Prayer
For the love that death cannot sever, for the time we shared along life's path, for the gifts of heart and mind, we are grateful. Divine one, help us to understand that grief and love go hand in hand.

As we are made more aware of light by kindling this Yahrzeit candle, may we remember the light which (say the name) brought in the world.

Zich-ro-no(m) Zich-ro-nah(f) liv'ra-cha.
May his/her memory be for a blessing.
  Message from Rabbi Boettiger

It's true that Judaism has a lunar/solar hybrid calendar, but essentially we're a lunar tradition. We mark months by moons, and our primary holidays take place mid-month, underneath the full moon's glow. During your seder this year, make sure to interrupt the proceedings to go outside, and experience the moonlight. Send your guests out into the streets or forest or meadow for ten minutes to look for Elijah. The moon is our witness. Jews have been marking this season of liberation under this same full moon for thousands of years. It's easier sometimes, outside under the moon, to feel personally connected to this endless odyssey of going out of Egypt.

In the Haggadah we read:

In every generation, each person should feel as though she or he were redeemed from Egypt...For the Holy One redeemed not only our ancestors, He redeemed us with them.

What could this possibly mean? It reminds us of another famous midrash that teaches that all of us were present at Mount Sinai when the Torah was given: all souls past, present, and future. In the Book of Deuteronomy the same point is made when God says, "I make this covenant...not with you alone, but both with those who are standing here with us this day before the Lord our God, and with those who are not with us here this day." (29:13) Passover is not something that happened way back when that we are commemorating when we gather at our seder tables. Each year, we are commanded to tell the story of the exodus to help remind us that we are still coming out of Egypt. By commanding us to re-tell the story, the tradition is asking us to re-live the story. Michael Strassfeld writes, "Jewish history is also a timeless present...We are meant to re-experience the slavery and the redemption that occurs in each day of our lives. It is our own story, not just some ancient history that we retell at Passover."

Judaism is a full-contact sport. If we see our holidays not simply as ways to remember and honor what has already happened, but as guides that can illuminate our lives today, season by season, then the tradition comes to life as well.

We will be building on last year's well-attended community seder, and offering another one this year on the second night - Tuesday, April 15th - here at TES. It is meant to be an intergenerational gathering, as Passover was intended - so please sign up to join us.

L'shalom,
