We're Not Just Blowing Smoke
|
CustomVault is leveraging its thirty years of experience in pharmaceuticals, and extending its offerings to medical marijuana growers and dispensaries. This vertical is not just a fly-by-night opportunity. Medical marijuana legislature in Alaska, Oregon and Washington passed in 1998, starting a slow trend of adoption. But the movement appears to be accelerating. In the last two years, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota and New Hampshire have all enacted laws to legalize medical marijuana. Next up in potential adopters are the states of Ohio, Kentucky, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Florida. With their approvals, medical marijuana would indeed become legal in more than half of all states in the US.
But as they say, the devil is in the details. For many states, the time required for establishing program parameters and process has held up approvals for dispensaries, growers, and patients alike. Rightly so. States are building these systems from the ground up. Furthermore, medical marijuana is a complicated subject, and security is not a small part of this. Read more.

Scheduling Changes Could Be More Widespread

But one thing is clear; our customers are not pausing for too long. Many are aggressively getting ahead of the curve by taking action and planning for necessary vault expansions to accommodate a shift from Schedule III to Schedule II. The shift seems inevitable, and better preparation makes for an easier transition.
CustomVault's "what's next" question is this - what Schedule III will follow HCPs? We are hearing lots of buzz so stay tuned.

More than $80 million in prescription drugs were stolen from a Connecticut warehouse in 2010. This included chemotherapy drug Gemzar, Zyprexa for bipolar disorder treatment, and Prozac, the company's top seller. But in April of this year, the US Attorney's office announced the indictment of three Florida men charged with conspiracy and theft and thus completed the circle of their investigation. One additional suspect is now awaiting trial and his brother has already pled guilty to participation in the theft. In fact it was he that apparently led officials down the path of discovery. The Word On...
Pharma Results
According to the IMS (Institution for Healthcare Informatics), 2013 sales of pharmaceuticals rose +1% to $329.2 billion, thus reversing the trend downward the previous year. IMS reported 36 new molecular entity launches in 2013 (some post FDA approval) including 10 new cancer treatments and 17 new orphan drugs developed specifically to treat rare medical conditions. This activity countered exclusivity losses and the effects of generic substitution. Read more.
