2014 Statewide UH Master Gardener Conference

October 24-26, 2014

Our Maui Master Gardeners have designed an exclusive program for us! Friday evening meet master gardeners from across our state, to share and take home great ideas for own island programs. Saturday's tours feature behind the scenes visits to some of the Valley Isle's most interesting and exclusive gardening and farming locales. Celebrate with us at Saturday night's banquet and award ceremony. Expand your understanding on Sunday morning, choosing from advanced training topics about bees, breadfruit and fruit trees, aquaponics, grafting, ethnobotany, or school gardens. At a very affordable price, bring a friend with you.

West Hawaii Master Gardeners continue their support of efforts to control invasive species with outreach events about little fire ant (LFA,) coqui frog, and fountain grass. An estimated 90 percent of the trees that did damage in Tropical Storm Iselle were invasive albizia (Falcataria moluccana). Read about how MGs support the Waikoloa Dry Forest Initiative which is restoring native wiliwili trees (Erythrina sandwicensis). Read more here

Restoring the Wiliwili Forest of Waikoloa

Waikoloa Village on Hawaiʻi Island was built in an area that was once a native Hawaiian tropical dryland forest, one of the most biologically diverse and beautiful ecosystems of our islands. The lowland dry forests of the past have been almost completely lost, largely due to human activities, the introduction and expansion of feral ungulates, invasive plant species and an increase in fire frequency. What is left is precious. Although fragmented and degraded, the areas of native forest that still persist are beautiful and inspiring places, worthy of preservation.

Hylaeus, Hawaiian yellow faced bee.

With increasing worldwide awareness of the decline of pollinators, there is now great interest in promoting the diversity and abundance of wild bees as alternatives to imported honeybees. But most of the information is produced in mainland North America and is geared towards the bees found there. What about Hawai'i's native bees?
