O'ahu Master Gardener Program
by Jayme Grzebik, MG Coordinator for O'ahu County
Ilima Sida fallax |
The Oʻahu Master Gardener Training Class starts on February 1 and meets for 16 classes, until May 31st at the Urban Garden Center in Pearl City. We have room for 32 trainees in our UGC Classroom. Every year we take a field trip to the Leeward Community College where we visit a Native Plant Collection and Propagation Shadehouse. We also have Master Gardeners that offer demonstrations in the garden at UGC on selected topics. The students are encouraged to choose a group project to participate in throughout the class. The goal is to get to know Veteran Master Gardeners and fellow UGC volunteers, engage trainees in the UGC Gardens and gain knowledge on a subject of their choice. Projects are presented by groups on the last day of class where we invite all MGs and UH Specialists to attend.
Certified Oʻahu Master Gardeners write, solicit stories and produce a by-monthly newsletter that we would like to share with neighbor island MGs. The latest Newsletter can be seen here.

Our East Hawaii 2013 Training begins on February 26th and runs up to April 11th, with classes being held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am till 12:00 pm. We hope to make two field trips, one to the USDA Pacific Basin Agricultural Research Center (PBARC) and a second trip to the Imiloa Astronomy Center to view native plants in the landscape. Our most popular classes are the hands-on training in grafting and airlayers, tropical fruits. We usually have a welcoming pot luck lunch with the "old timers" at the end of the classes to introduce the new trainees to the other MGs. Our program can accommodate 20 people.

Grow Native!
Native Hawaiian Plants as Groundcovers
by Gregory A. Koob
Many native Hawaiian plants can serve well as ground covers. They work well in a variety of environments, from oceanfront gardens to landscapes up in the mountains and anywhere inbetween. Almost any place a nonnative plant works as a ground cover, there is a native plant that will work just as well. When choosing native plants for ground covers, take into consideration the natural environment that plant normally occurs in. But don't let that restrict your thinking.

Statewide Master Gardener Training Manual
Statewide Policies & Procedures Manual
As we continue to grow together, it is key that Master Gardeners have the opportunity to be the growth that will move us to the next level. Extension Faculty MG Coordinators are hoping that Master Gardeners are part of the process moving forward. In the next year, we will address the state of our UH Master Gardener Training Manuals. In our fiscal situation, we must seek opportunities and be creative in our endeavors. We simply don't have the resources to start from scratch and luckily we don't need to.
