Stories from the Heart: A Soul's Age

Even though my sister is only three years younger than me, she has always lovingly referred to me as "An Old Soul." Whenever she introduces me to her friends, she says, "This is my brother, he's an old soul. Don't try to understand how the two of us came from the same parents because you never will."

So, I was thinking recently that maybe I enjoy working with seniors because I am an old soul. Then I met Betty. Within the first five minutes of our meeting, Betty asked if she could tell me a joke. I said yes, and she did. Then she told another. Every time Betty spoke, her eyes twinkled with energy. I saw a book in Betty's bathroom titled "Learn Spanish in 100 Days." Betty is 87, much older than me in years. but I think her soul is younger than mine. At the end of our conversation, Betty asked if she could adopt me (maybe she likes old souls).

Meeting Betty reminded me that the age of one's soul doesn't matter nearly as much as the impact it has on others. I think I enjoy working with seniors because their souls, old or young, always impact mine.

News & Events: Old Dogs, New Tricks

Nancy LeVine crouches in front of a small frail dog sporting a veil of white fur around his snout and carefully aims her camera. The dog is 15 and the latest subject in LeVine's nine-year-long photographic project - "Senior Dogs Across America" - that has taken her to every region of the country, yielded hundreds of photos of wizened old dogs and garnered her hordes of human friends.

By giving visual voice to the dogs' movements and expressions, LeVine's work points up critical distinctions between how animals and people age, something she noticed while watching Lulu and Maxie, her own Miniature Australian Shepherds, grow old. "They floored me in how they always continued to own the moment," she says.

4 ounces low-fat, sugar-free lemon yogurt
1 teaspoon lime zest1 teaspoon fresh lime juice
4 to 6 pineapple chunks
4 to 6 strawberries
1 kiwi, peeled and diced
1/2 banana, cut into 1/2-inch chunks
4 to 6 red grapes
4 wooden skewers

In a small bowl, whisk together the yogurt, lime juice and lime zest. Cover and refrigerate until needed.

Thread 1 of each fruit onto the skewer. Repeat with the other skewers until the fruit is gone. Serve with the lemon lime dip.
