Stories from the Heart: Fishing Together
|
My grandpa Clint loved to fish. Every time I saw him, about once each year, we fished together. It was the only time I fished all year, and it was special. Not because of the type or number of fish I caught, but because I knew my grandpa enjoyed spending time with me.
Last week, I went fishing with my six year old son. He caught his first fish, a bass (photo). The two minutes from when he hooked the fish to when we let it go were a flurry of activity. He reeled, we yelled, we laughed, we took a photo, we took the hook out, we released the fish. The other 58 minutes were, well, slow. We didn't catch another fish. We were quiet, we were patient, and we were together.
As I fished with my son last week, it wasn't hard for me to remember that it wasn't about the number or type of fish caught. It was about showing my son the importance of time together. Grandpa Clint taught me that, and I hope I never forget it.
