Greetings!
From The President
Much of the last several weeks has involved the leadership team presenting the Bunker/Drainage Renovation Project to the membership.  The recommendations were developed after several years of meetings, fact finding and debate before the final product was developed.  The process involved the Long Range Planning, Green and Financial Operations Committees and included members, staff and outside professionals.

This recommendation by the Board is not a hurried judgment and we believe is in the best interests of the membership.  The Bunker/Drainage Project can be completed using current capital fund reserves and no increase in the capital contribution.

Over a series of five meetings, approximately 300 of our members attended.  That attendance demonstrates the level of interest in the topic, and far exceeded previous member involvement on any other topics.  Many good questions were asked and the presentation was modified slightly after each meeting to make sure the message was clearer.

Yesterday you received an email and link to a member ballot which includes two questions:  (1) election of directors and (2) Bunker/Drainage Renovation.  The question for each is to "Approve" or "Not Approve".  The Board is committed to having the members set the future direction of the club by a member vote on these two choices.

The Bunker/Drainage Renovation is specifically for the $850,000 highlighted in the presentations.  The ballot does not include any funding for a possible Phase II project to address the remaining holes.  Those plans have not been completed or approved by the Board.

For those not attending information meetings we provided links to the presentation materials in the Annual Meeting notice sent yesterday. I hope this provides sufficient background on the subjects.

A big thank you to Dick Danais, Long Range Planning, Harry Ward, Long Range Planning - Board Liaison and Jim Uffelman, Green Committee for their many hours of work.  Also a thank you to the committees who sat thru many early morning meetings to prepare for this vote.

My personal appeal is that you make an informed decision and cast your ballot.  Everyone has worked hard to be as transparent as possible.  Whatever the outcome, it will be a member driven decision.

President

Notes From Your Pro
Greetings golf members! "I hit it great on the range, but just couldn't bring it to the course." This line is the sign of an epidemic that we hear of far too often in and around the golf shop. If you're struggling to demonstrate your "A" game where it actually matters (on the course and in pressure moments), I'd suggest you take a step back to evaluate the way in which you warm up and practice.  Think of how many times you hit the same club to the same target on the range. Now consider how many times during your average round that you hit the same club more than twice in a row. Playing golf is far different from the way I see many of our members practicing golf and that is the root cause of this frustrating issue. Regularly switching clubs, changing targets and consistently adhering to your pre-shot routine are key elements to practicing the way you play. There is a time on the range when it's important to groove several shots in row in order to establish a rhythm, but if that's the extent of your warm up or practice session you're not setting yourself up for success on the course. A pre-shot routine should be a part of every golfer's warm up as this ritual is crucial to calming the mind and any nerves before pulling the trigger. Our golf professionals are eager to help you with this problem or any others that may be affecting your enjoyment of the game.

It's spring break season, which means the community is about to experience an influx of young visitors over the next several weeks. To provide you some relief and your grandkids something fun to do, our pros will be offering week long junior golf camps. These are great opportunities to develop their golf skills and etiquette in a fun, friendly learning atmosphere. Click Here to sign them up today on Foretees or by calling the golf shop. Details are as follows:

Dates: March 14-17, 21-24, 28-31
Ages: 6-10 (2-3pm), 11-15 (3-4pm)
Weekly Cost: *$125 (four 1-hour lessons Monday - Thursday) includes shirt, hat and daily snack

There are several merchandise deals worth noting in the golf shop this month. All shoes and outerwear is 30% off retail for the month of March. Ordering three dozen personalized Titleist Pro V1 golf balls will earn you a fourth dozen with the same imprint at no charge. A ladies trunk show has been scheduled in conjunction with the Hohokam Classic on Wednesday, March 16th. It will be open to the general membership from 11am - 1pm that day.

Kail Brinton is our golf department Employee of the Month for March. Since joining our outside service staff in the fall he's put together a very impressive body of work. Kail's consistent drive, truly genuine persona, and willingness to take on any challenge with a positive attitude are attributes that provide great value to our team. I rarely give this compliment, but Kail is the the type of guy you'd want your daughter to marry. He's a top-notch person that will go out of his way to brighten up your day.

March Madness is just around the corner and we'll be having our annual bracket challenge after the tournament is set on Selection Sunday. Whether you watch college basketball or are just a sucker for some action, fill out a bracket and have some fun following the games.

Until next time, fairways and greens!

What has happened to El Nino?  Here I was expecting all this rain predicted from the strongest record El Nino in history, and nothing.  Hopefully it doesn't show up in March and April and lead to an abnormally humid summer.  But I guess it is better to complain about the weather than what is happening in this year's Presidential race?

As I have discussed in past articles, last summer the irrigation heads on the Peaks fairways were switched out for a newer model.  This new head provides greater distribution uniformity of the applied water which makes irrigation cycles more efficient.  One problem that occurred with the older heads on the Peaks, and one we encounter daily on the Ranch is plugged nozzles.  As you can see in the pictures below, the older nozzles have small openings that allow sand and other particles to easily clog the nozzles.  Once a nozzle is clogged, the uniformity drops, and wet or dry areas appear adjacent to the head.   With over 3,000 sprinklers on both courses, it is hard to check each one everyday to see if they are clogged.

The newer heads that went in on the Peaks and around all the greens have one big nozzle and 2 smaller nozzles that eliminate the problem of clogging.  These new nozzles greatly improved the watering where they were installed.  It has even allowed us to reducing watering times as water is applied more uniformly over a given area.  Our plan is to install them on the Ranch in the next few years.

Recently I was out taking soil samples to see how far along the Bermuda was in terms of transition in the fairways.  I was surprised in a one inch sample I found 3 green shoots.  That is encouraging for that the Bermuda is slowly starting to come out of dormancy due to the warmer than expected February weather.  The roughs are coming in strong as we are "greening up" as they too come out of dormancy.

Lastly, watch your email inbox for the ballot pertaining to the Bunker and Drainage Renovation project proposed for this summer.  We need your YES vote to proceed, as the project is over $500,000.  This plan can be accomplished using existing capital reserves and NO additional assessment.  It will greatly improve both courses in terms of drainage in and around bunkers and greens.  And playability will be addressed with shallower bunkers and strategic bunker placement.

Keep it in the short grass,

From The MGA
The Annual Member-Member event was a huge success.  We had both golf courses in the afternoon and the pace of play was fantastic.  Many thanks to the TVGC for allowing us to use both courses.  The dinner was excellent and Ron Wax is to be commended for a job well done.  The Gross Winners were Pete Robinson and Chris Bates with a score of 210 and the Net Winners were Bob Buhler and Pat Echelbarger with a net 193.

On March 2 after our breakfast meeting we held a Divot Repair Day where we estimate to have filled over 5,000 divots on the Peaks Course.  Thanks to all of you who fix your own divots plus any others you may see.  The winners of the event were Dave Voita, Phil Newhall, Dave Larson, and Jerry Jurgens with a score of 76 Stableford Points from their best two balls.  There was a twist to this game in that the Golf Shop had a pro stationed on each par three and the Pro would hit his shot.  If any one of the four team members was "inside" the Pro then that team could double the points earned on that hole.

Stroke Play starts on Wednesday, March 9th and concludes on Friday the 11th.

The Desert Classic is April 6-9 and as of today we have 57 teams and need to get to 60 teams.  Invite your buddy from back home or have your son come play.  Click Here to sign up today!

Russ Chance and his nominating committee has offered the following four men as candidates for MGA openings for the 2016-17 season:  Jim Anton, Jim Bye, Don Eggebrecht and Tim Westbay.  If you would like to self-nominate, please contact Russ Chance and he will tell you what the procedure is.  We will vote on new Officers and Board Members at the Annual Meeting on April 20.

From The WGA
Congratulations to WGA member Cheryl Potter for her Hole-in-One during Interclub play at Mirabel Country Club on February 18.  She aced the 97-yard 8th hole with a 9-iron.  It was quite a feat considering tight competition on a tough, unfamiliar course.  Cheryl will receive a certificate from the AWGA to memorialize her accomplishment.

We received a great response to our appeal for volunteers for WGA positions for the 2016-17 season.  We still have a few spots to fill, so if you are interested In helping out, please contact Cindy Carlson or Connie Goerich.  It's a great way to get to know your fellow golfers.

Our annual Stroke Play Championship is scheduled for April 12 and April 14.  This tournament consists of 2 days of flighted gross and net stroke play followed by a celebration at 5:00 p.m. at the 9th green of the Peaks on April 14.  Sign-up on ForeTees is ongoing.

Be sure to sign up early for the March 22 8:30 a.m. shotgun followed by a lunch meeting.  You can attend the lunch even if you don't play in the shotgun.

The Interclub season is winding down but the weather has now been fantastic, much improved from the earlier matches as pictured below.  Roadrunner has just one more match in April. Tonto Verde is in the middle of the pack in that league.

Cactus league had a very fun bright spot at Mirabel when Cheryl Potter had a hole in one. Tonto has played some very formidable opponents in Cactus league, often playing single digit handicaps at several courses. Sonoran league is doing very well; last week we had 4 Tonto players shoot in the 70's while defeating a very strong Desert Mountain team by 20 points. Check out the website for complete results.

Sign-up for Interclub play for 2016-2017 started March 1 and ends March 31 on ForeTees. All information regarding Tonto Verde Interclub play is on tontoverde.org  under the WGA tab, WGA Standing Rules and Bylaws, and Interclub Guidelines. Check with Donnielle in the pro shop for information on ordering team uniforms. These orders need to be placed in the next week or so.

Lady Putters Celebrate St. Paddy's Day
The Lady Putters will be wearing green and stalking the leprechauns next Wednesday, March 9 at the annual St. Patrick's Day event.  Sure to be a good time, participants are encouraged to be Irish for a day.  With a wee bit of help from the leprechauns and a lot of luck, perhaps there will be a few extra holes in one!  And who knows, perhaps someone will find a pot of gold on the other side of the footbridge.  All putters should register on Foretees for this special celebration by noon on Sunday, March 6.  Announcements will begin at 10:15, and putting at 10:30 a.m. followed by lunch.  Lady Putters will not meet on Wednesday, March 16.  Putting activities will resume on Wednesday, March 23.  For more information on Lady Putters check the Tonto Verde website.  To join, contact Treasurer Sue Long at seplong@cox.net or 480-550-2509.
Live Radio Broadcast From Tonto Verde
Backspin the Golf Show will be doing a live remote from the Tonto Verde Clubhouse on March 12th from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Three of our leaders will be interviewed and guests are welcome to watch the show.

Tonto resident and LPGA Professional Jenny Lidback finished tied for 22nd at the Walgreens Charity Classic yesterday. It was the first event of the year on the LPGA Legends Tour. Jen shot 73-71=144.

Her mom, Franca, a Rio resident caddied the first round and Jody Anschutz caddied the second. Juli Inkster won the event at 9 under.
Golf Clubs And Putters For Grandkids
The TV Lending Closet and the TV Golf Pro Shop have teamed up to provide your grandchildren with golf club sets for their use and enjoyment during their visits here in Tonto with you.

The clubs, made especially for youth by US KIDS GOLF, are height and weight appropriate.  The sets currently available will fit youth from 39' tall to 63" tall.  The Golf Shop has a measuring guide which will insure proper fit.
Because we have a limited supply of the clubs, both right and left handed, we are asking that they be checked out daily and returned daily to the Golf Shop (similar to the Demo Program) rather than once weekly to the Lending Closet so that there is availability for the next young golfer.

We also have a supply of putters, separate from the sets, for use on our Putting Course - also available on a daily basis through the Golf Shop.

Watch for information from the Golf Shop regarding Junior Golf Camps here at Tonto Verde during schools spring breaks!
