From The President
The Board of Directors met in the clubhouse on February 4th at its regularly scheduled meeting. The Board approved several items.
Temporary Member Event Play Policy - As recommended by the Golf Committee and association boards, this new policy will allow participation in all TVGC tournaments by Temporary Members, with the exception of MGA & WGA Stroke and Match Play Championships.
Rio Verde Summer Reciprocity Fee Policy - The Board approved a Golf Committee recommendation to end the "no greens fee" summer play policy with Rio Verde. We will continue to welcome Rio golfers during summer months and the ten-play rule is waived for the period June 1 - September 30th. See Golf Committee report for more details.
Temporary Membership Coordinator Position Description - A job description for the newly created Membership Coordinator position was presented and approved by the Board. Aubrie Nelson has accepted the position.
Ratify New Membership Offer - The new membership offer during the month of February was ratified by the Board. It has been distributed to the membership.
Temporary Member Hole- in- One Policy - A new policy to have Temporary Members included in the Hole-in-One program was presented at last month's meeting was ratified.
Appointment of RSM - At the recommendation of Financial Operations Committee the Board approved engagement of RSM for both audits and tax services for 2016 fiscal year.
Nominating Committee - Mike Morehouse, Chair, announced the names of the three candidates to fill the retiring Board positions of Sharon Kroner and Clarence Hein. They are Dick Dugan (Financial Operations Committee Chair), Jim Uffelman (Green Committee Chair), and Harry Ward (current Board member). These names were approved by the Board and will be placed on the election ballot.
Other items discussed include:
Realtor Meeting - A January meeting with fifteen realtors introduced our new membership team and re-engaged the connection with the real estate community. The meeting was positive with regular dialogue scheduled in the future.
Ice Machine Theft - After the second theft of an ice machine, this one on #4-hole Peaks, it has been decided not to replace it. You will notice a drinking fountain in the same place. We plan to secure the machine on #9-hole Ranch in some manner to be determined. Termination of TVR Membership Agreement - By mutual agreement the contract between Tonto Verde Realty and Tonto Verde Golf Club as the sole seller of TVGC memberships has been terminated. Strategic Plan - In Executive Session, the Long Range Planning Committee made a presentation of the Strategic Plan, which was accepted by the Board. The plan is the result of several years of gathering data and discussion. An important element is a long-term Capital Plan. This plan includes a recommendation to make multi-year phased improvements to the golf courses consistent with the Master Plan. A key component of the plan is Phase I & II bunker renovation. This project is in excess of $500,000 which is the threshold for member approval as required in the Bylaws. The plan can be accomplished using existing capital reserves and no additional assessment. The Board recommends this plan to the membership for a vote. Informational meetings will be set-up for February 23, 26 and March 1. Written materials we also be available. More details will follow. Looks like the long endured cold spell may be ending, and spring golf is just around the corner. Scott Thiss
President

Notes From Your Pro
Greetings golf members. The sunshine and warmer temps during Phoenix Open weekend gave us a needed shot in the arm with guest and outside play. It's been gratifying to hear compliments from first time golfers and visitors to Tonto Verde. Comments about the outstanding condition of the greens, playability of the courses and general beauty of the area in which we reside never get old. It's hard not to take these things for granted when you get to experience them everyday, but it's a refreshing feeling when you consider the alternatives.
We had a couple of MGA and WGA major championships wrap up this past week. Congratulations to Dave Mooty for claiming his first MGA Match Play Championship by defeating Jay Kernan 3&1 in the final match on the Peaks this past Sunday. Also a big congratulations to our WGA Four-Member Champions: Donna Watson, Chris Demma, Nance Larson and Denise Madaline. Well played by all!
As the golf season continues to heat up so do the deals in the golf shop. All shoes, golf bags and outerwear will be sold at 30% off retail for the entire month of February. New demo clubs from Ping, Callaway and Cobra are also fresh out of their boxes and waiting to be hit. TaylorMade's new M2 product launch coincides with their fitting day on our range Thursday, February 18th (appointments can be made through the golf shop).
Kyle Beversdorf has been voted our Employee of the Month for February. He has more than proven himself in the three short months that he's been at Tonto by consistently bringing a "we before me" attitude, a tireless work ethic and a knack for building awesome spreadsheets. Kyle is clearly driven to succeed at whatever he puts his mind to. We're fortunate to have him on our team this season and hopefully well in to the future.
Until next time, fairways and greens!

Superintendent's Tee Box
It has been an abnormally cold start to the New Year so far. Once we feel the weather will change, another round of frost delays works its way into the valley and tee times get pushed back. Hopefully cold nights are behind us and the grass can start growing on a more predictable pattern.
This fluctuation in temperature was also hard on the fish in the lake next to the clubhouse. Anyone who played the Peaks in mid to late January would have noticed many dead fish along the edge of the lake by 18 green. During the summer, these Tilapia can be seen feeding on algae in large schools, but they are really noticed during a winter die-off event. Tilapia provides an invaluable source of algae control for most of the year, without the use of harsh chemicals. In most cases, they do not die-off each winter. While some years there are few dead Tilapia, other years it can be a "bumper crop." Why is the die-off so bad in years, like now? Seasonally, it is the rate of temperature change. When we experience an unusually long warm fall season, then winter temperatures hit suddenly, it causes the water temperature to drop below 55 F very quickly. Tilapia can tolerate a gradual change and survive, but do not fare well with such a drastic change in temperature. The death and decomposition cycle of the Tilapia is very important to lake management decisions. First, they die and sink to the bottom, where they start to decompose. The swim bladder then fills with gasses around 2 - 4 weeks, and the half rotten fish will rise to the water's surface. This is when they should be removed, as the smell is horrible. In conversations with the company we contract to manage the lakes, they recommend stocking Catfish as they consume dead and dying Tilapia. As I have expressed in prior articles, we ask that all carts utilize the 90 degree rule. Carts should leave the path at a 90 degree angle to their ball. Then proceed to hit the ball and maybe your partner's ball, then get back on the path. I have noticed carts getting on the turf right past the tee box then getting back on the path near the green. We are trying to also avoid carts driving down the roughs, as the Bermuda is not growing right now due to the cold temperatures. Less turf damage will result by limiting the amount of traffic on the fairways and roughs from using the 90 degree rule. Warm days and low scores ahead.
Keep it in the short grass, Travis Blamires Golf Course Superintendent

From The Golf Committee
At our January 25, 2016 committee meeting the Golf Committee passed and recommended to the TVGC board two important policy changes. The TVGC board at their February 4, 2016 meeting subsequential approved the two policy changes.
Reciprocity Policy Change
As you may know a limited reciprocity policy was adopted between Rio Verde Country Club and Tonto Verde Golf Club in 2013. The policy has allowed RVCC and TVGC golf members to play each other's courses during the low season (summer) months, at no charge to the members.
The TVGC Board (following a recommendation from the Golf Committee) adopted the following change to our reciprocity policy. Beginning June 1st thru September 30, 2016, a RVCC member playing TVGC will be charged a green fee equal to other outside play fees, which may vary but is currently $30. This is a nominal charge and is a fairly standard process across the Valley with comparable clubs.
TVGC is a semi-private golf course with a "Pay to Play" philosophy for non-members. This change enables us to remain consistent while still giving our RVCC neighbors a golf experience at a value price.
We admit this change comes at a poor time. Some may consider this a retaliation for the demise of the Good Neighbor Policy. We assure you it is not. Our ten play non-member limit continues to be waived for RVCC summer golfers. The Board of Directors, the staff of the TVGC, and our members value our friendships with their RVCC counterparts.
Temporary Member Tournament Play Policy
Following a recommendation from the MGA, and concurrence from the WGA and the CGA, the Golf Committee passed, and the TVGC board approved this change to our Temporary Member policy: Temporary members may play (as members only) without restriction in all golf events except stroke and match play club championships.

From The MGA
Our February 3rd event brought out 114 players who enjoyed a "one best ball per cart" game. The winners at 20 under par were Fog Hamilton, Don Eggebrecht, Tim Gabrielse and John Muilenberg. We had a "Fix Divot Day" preceding our round and we estimate that each player repaired about 30 divots, which means we filled over 3,400 divots. We challenge the WGA to hold a "Divot Day" and see if they can repair more than 3,400!
Our Spring Best Ball starts Wednesday, February 10 and we have 60 two-man teams ready to go in ten flights. Guest Day is February 15th at 12:30 and we have a full field of 60 teams with four teams on the wait list. Our Annual Member-Member (Pick-a-Pal) competition gets under way on February 22 and concludes with dinner and awards after play on the 24th. We currently have 69 teams signed up and we are using both golf courses so we can accommodate as many members that want to play.
You can Click Here to register for either the Member-Member or the Desert Classic. The Desert Classic, April 6-9, still has room for an additional three teams. We currently have 57 teams registered. If you have already registered, contact the Golf Shop and schedule your Wednesday April 6th practice round. The Golf Shop will give you the details if you prefer to play your practice round before April 6.

Golf Clubs And Putters For Grandkids
The TV Lending Closet and the TV Golf Pro Shop have teamed up to provide your grandchildren with golf club sets for their use and enjoyment during their visits here in Tonto with you.
The clubs, made especially for youth by US KIDS GOLF, are height and weight appropriate. The sets currently available will fit youth from 39' tall to 63" tall. The Golf Shop has a measuring guide which will insure proper fit.
Because we have a limited supply of the clubs, both right and left handed, we are asking that they be checked out daily and returned daily to the Golf Shop (similar to the Demo Program) rather than once weekly to the Lending Closet so that there is availability for the next young golfer.
We also have a supply of putters, separate from the sets, for use on our Putting Course - also available on a daily basis through the Golf Shop. Watch for information from the Golf Shop regarding Junior Golf Camps here at Tonto Verde during schools spring breaks!
