 | From The President
|
The big news of the last week was my "Message to Members" regarding the Good Neighbor Policy discussion with Rio Verde. In my two and one-half years as your President, I have never received so many comments about an issue. So far 100% of members' comments support the Board's decision to reject the Rio proposal for golf access. The complete message can be found in the archive by Clicking Here.
Your Board of Directors met by conference call on October 1st. The agenda was light as we have covered many topics over the summer months which I have previously reported to you.
The only Action Item was the approval of an additional community way-finding sign, bringing the total to three on golf course property. All three monument style signs are to be designed and built consistent with Tonto Verde signage and marketing standards. Signs will be located either near Dynamite or Forest Roads, adjacent to the courses and will not interfere with golf in any way. All surveys, easements and legal work are the responsibility of the TVA.
I will be absent the month of November visiting family in Australia. Jay Simons, Vice President, will be in charge of all Board activities during that time. Please call Jay if you have any issues.
We welcome everyone back to our beautiful desert to enjoy another fun and exciting golf season. Safe travels.
Scott Thiss
President

 | Notes From Your Pro |
Greetings golf members! It's been great to see a bunch of familiar faces return to Tonto Verde as we all look ahead to an exciting new season. I would like to start this article by issuing a well-deserved kudos to the maintenance team for their efforts up to this point in the overseed process. This is a massive undertaking and they're getting it done well with one course open every day throughout the entire month of October.
Fresh rye grass is a beautiful thing, but it does require some TLC during the first few weeks after a course reopens. To that end, the Peaks and Ranch will have "Cart Path Only" restrictions (3 weeks for disability flags; 4 weeks for all other carts). Get in the habit of bringing your sand/seed bottles out to the fairway while we are "Cart Path Only" as this should help mitigate pace of play issues while keeping our courses looking their best. Golfers using disability flags will be asked to renew their request annually. Forms are available in the golf shop and on the golf homepage of our website.
With the courses playing softer and longer over the next several weeks, golfers should think about how they're going to adapt to these conditions. Teeing it forward is always a recommended option. If you have an adjustable driver, it might be worthwhile to experiment with lofting up to maximize your carry. Getting the ball to the hole on the greens can also be a challenge. Consider trying a heavier putter or temporarily adding some lead tape to your current one. The Professional Staff is here to help you play better golf so don't hesitate to reach out if and when frustration sets in.
There has been a staffing change in the golf shop since my announcement in the previous Divot Digest. Matt Laird is going to be moving to Montana at the end of October to pursue opportunities at The Yellowstone Club. We thank him for everything he brought to Tonto and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. Donnielle will continue to act as our Liaison to the NDA in his absence.
The following are a few upcoming special events worth noting on your calendars:
- TaylorMade Fitting Day - Thursday, November 5th (10 am - 2 pm) - Sign up for half hour focused fitting appointments in the golf shop.
- Yoga for Golf - Friday, November 13th (10:00 - 11:15 am) - Nationally recognized instructor Katherine Roberts will be conducting a 75-minute workshop on our driving range. You can view more details and sign up for this event on ForeTees.
- Demo Day - Friday, November 20th (10 am - 3 pm) - Test out the latest equipment from Ping, Cobra, Callaway and Srixon. Ecco will also be on the range conducting a shoe fitting event from 1 - 4 pm.
For more news and notes from the golf shop stay tuned to the golf homepage on Tontoverde.org. Until next time, keep em flying long and straight!

| Superintendent's Tee Box |
October is here, and with it brings cooler weather and overseed season. This is always the busiest and most stressful time of year for a Golf Course Superintendent in the Southwest. Several questions always enter my mind on any given day during this time: Is the weather going to cooperate? Is the seed going to grow? What could I have done differently to have a better outcome?
I am happy to say that we finished seeding the Peaks course and it is now open for play. We did struggle a bit once the seed was put down. The weather decided to turn hot once again, and we could not get enough water on the seed to help it germinate evenly. But Mother Nature helped out with a few rain storms and cooler weather. We have been mowing the new grass for a week, and it will continue to mature and get thicker as time goes forward. This week we will prep and seed the Ranch and have it open on November 2nd, weather permitting.
To help the new turfgrass establish, we will be cart path only for 4 weeks, unless you have special needs, which carts can go off paths in 3 weeks. One reason carts are kept on the paths is that we still have a few "wet areas" on the course for which we don't want traffic driving through. Once carts are allowed of the paths, we ask that everyone utilize the 90 degree rule when crossing the non-overseed roughs. The roughs will start to go into dormancy with cooler temperatures and by limiting traffic will help the survival for next summer.
Once we finish seeding the Ranch and have both courses open on November 2nd, we will implement a 5 pin placement rotation on the greens. Currently we use the 3 pin placement rotation, front, middle, back. This will eliminate having every 3rd green with the same pin location, and will change up the way each course has been played. Stop by the Golf Shop to pick up the new pin placement cards as we get closer to November 2nd.
Safe travel for those coming back as we look forward to everyone's return for the upcoming season.
Keep it in the short grass,
Travis Blamires
Golf Course Superintendent

 | A Salute To Veterans |
On Wednesday, November 11, (Veterans Day) Tonto Verde wants to especially recognize those who have served in the military on behalf of the United States and freedom.
If you are a Veteran, be sure to check in at the pro-shop that day where you will receive deserved recognition from the Tonto Verde Golf Club, the Tonto Verde Association and everyone at Tonto Verde. In addition to our thanks, you will also receive a commemorative American flag pin. We hope you will wear the pin proudly throughout the day so your friends at Tonto can thank you personally. After golf or any time that day, wear your pin and receive one FREE tap beer in the TV grill or restaurant.
Throughout the day, the pro shop also will be conducting a Veterans Day raffle to allow everyone a chance to win a $300 gift certificate generously donated by the pro shop. All proceeds from the raffle will be donated to the Wounded Warriors Project, on behalf of Tonto Verde. Raffle tickets are $5.00 each or five for $20.00.
Tonto Verde thanks all veterans....on Veterans Day and every day!

 | Electric Cart Storage Facility Update |
In last month's Divot Digest, I reported that we were on time and on budget. Well, I spoke too soon. In the last ten days two issues arose that we are in the process of resolving:
1) The final electrical connection to the main power supply in the Clubhouse would not be completed by SRP as they determined that the meter room was not up to their code for fire protection. Working in cooperation with Steve Peterman and Jeff Ostlund a plan is in process to bring the meter room up to code and complete the hookup. This will have minimal financial impact. Of note is that this room passed inspection and was approved at the completion of the remodel 5 years ago.
2) The Rio Verde Fire Marshall determined that the building needed a sprinkler system. The contractor disagrees as Maricopa County and the State Fire Marshall did not require a sprinkler system before issuing permits. The issue is being addressed by the contractor with the appropriate agencies. We anticipate a satisfactory resolution with minimal expense that will keep us within budget.
3) These issues will delay delivery and use of the electric carts but, we hope to have the problems resolved in the near future.
A big thank you to Jeff Ostlund as he has been our voice in addressing these problems.
