 Greetings!
From The President

The Board of Directors held a conference call meeting on August 6th.   Several important policy decisions were discussed and approved. These include:
  • Jeff Ostlund presented a detailed request to acquire sixty (60) electric Club Car golf carts. A thorough analysis of the various vendors resulted in Club Car being selected as the best choice for Tonto Verde. The carts will have a basic GPS package including a "limiter" which will let the golf shop know at all times where each cart is located on the course and also prevent carts from driving onto restricted areas (desert, too close to the green, etc.). For color selection Jeff consulted with Julie Varda of the Marketing Committee for advice. The carts will be buff (tan) in color with the Tonto Verde Golf Club logo on the front. This will be consistent with the Tonto Verde branding effort on the golf course and within the community.

The carts will be delivered in 45-60 days and ready to occupy the new cart barn facility. A recommendation as to lease vs. buy will be made by the Financial Operations Committee within 30 days. This is a budgeted item.
  • The addition of new golf carts requires a fresh perspective as to how we manage the fleet. Jeff Ostlund and the Golf Committee proposed a new fee policy for member and guest use of TVGC owned golf carts. The committee researched best practices at other nearby clubs and developed a fee structure consistent with the market. TVGC owned carts will no longer be free for member use. The Board approved this new policy.

Member owned golf carts are not part of this policy. The policy will be posted shortly for member review.
  • The Tonto Verde Association has requested permission to place permanent, "monument" style signs on golf course property. Additional signage has been deemed to be critical to our entire community as we compete for attention with the increased activity at Trilogy Verde River Ranch project. The location of the first sign will be at the corner of Forest Road and Rio Verde Drive (Dynamite), behind #11 Ranch green and inside the barbed-wire fencing. This sign will be similar to our flagstone entrance signage, and will not interfere with play. The Board approved the concept subject to final location and specification details.
  • Based on preliminary feedback from our auditors, McGladrey & Co, it has been recommended we initiate a policy relating to use of company/business assets for personal use. Although TVGC does address internet/computer usage in its employee handbook, additional language has been incorporated to address other types of company assets that might be used for personal consumption without written approval by TVGC.   The addition will strengthen and clarify our existing policy for all employees and members.

Update: The cart barn facility is progressing with footings poured and block walls up. The final look with be similar to the exterior of the clubhouse. When members return in the fall the structure may look a bit stark. Pam Torrance has agreed to help landscape the structure so it will have a desert appearance. We ask everyone for a little patience before the project is complete. Dave Burns and Jeff continue to provide TVGC oversight of construction.

I hope your summer has been fun!

President
Notes From Your Pro
Greetings golf members! Building for the future has been the theme at Tonto as of late. The construction of the new cart storage facility has taken center stage and it's a major indication of the progress that TVGC has made less than five years into member ownership. Thank you to everyone involved in the planning stages of this project, particularly Dave Burns, who refused to let a bevy of obstacles prevent this dream from becoming a reality. We're currently looking at a mid-September completion date for the building and early October for delivery of the new Club Car fleet.

If you're looking for some variety in your golfing life, check out the list of reciprocal clubs that is published on the golf homepage of the website. Reciprocal agreements are typically valid up until the time a course goes down for overseeding. Take advantage of this program while you still can.

The golf shop staffing situation has become clear and we're fortunate to have very little turnover headed into the coming season. The following is a list of our professional staff and the leagues that they will be working with this season.

MGA - Justin Davis and Ross McLean

WGA - Mike Bishop and Cory Moran

NDA - Matt Laird and Donnielle Ostlund

CGA - Aubrie Nelson and Ashli Helstrom

Lady Putters - Aubrie Nelson and Ashli Helstrom

Ashli Helstrom is the only new face that you'll be seeing in the golf shop. Originally from Hibbing, Minnesota, Ashli earned a degree in Business Administration at the University of Montana while playing on their golf team all four years she attended. We think she's going to be a great fit for our team and welcome her with open arms.

Tune into the final major of the year this week as Whistling Straits plays host to the PGA Championship. Rory McIlroy is back from injury to challenge recent major winners Jordan Spieth and Zach Johnson. The rugged links style course is dramatic in nature and should provide an entertaining weekend of golf.

Until next time, keep em' flying long and straight!

As I write this month's article, we are only 5 weeks away from overseeding the Peaks golf course.  Where has all the time gone this summer?

As most know, we completed the irrigation project on the Peaks course, which consisted of new fairway sprinkler heads and control satellites.  This project has made a big improvement into how water is applied to the golf course.  Having all the heads and nozzles the same age and type allows for more uniformity.  This also makes for a more efficient system, and we are able to better address spacing issues with the newer heads.  Part of the project also included a new control system to run the irrigation.  This new program allows for more sprinklers to run at once, thus saving energy and money by reducing the overall time the pumps are running.  We continue to fine tune the entire system and feel confident in its ability to get the water where it needs to go.  To piggyback onto this project, we also purchased 100 sprinkler heads at a discounted price due to the volume we bought this summer with Toro.  This allowed us to complete all the greens on both course so they now have the same type of sprinklers around them, thus increasing uniformity and application rates.

As I mentioned last month, we have redone 4 bunkers on the Peaks and 2 on the Ranch courses.  Most of these bunkers had the old sand removed and new sand put back in.  The new sand is a high quality sand that most courses in Scottsdale are using, and it provides an improved playing surface from the older sand.  We continue to rework the existing bunkers by utilizing a scarifier to loosen up the sand and address areas where the sand depth is limited.  By doing this throughout the summer, we have helped them to drain a little better, and the bunkers have become somewhat uniform.  I look forward to your feedback this winter on the new sand.

As I have been reading and heard on TV, they are expecting a pretty substantial El Nino this winter.  So for us that could mean an abnormally wet winter, maybe comparable to the 1997-98 El Nino.  So to prepare, we will be applying a pre-emergent herbicide in the next few weeks to the desert areas and roughs ahead of overseeding.  This product will limit the amount of weeds that germinate to provide a cleaner looking appearance.  It will also reduce the amount of labor we have to assign to cleanup these areas during the winter/spring.

Keep it in the short grass,

From The WGA
Before you know it, it will be time to start thinking about packing up the car and heading back to Tonto Verde for another great season of WGA golf. Whether you are new to Tonto Verde or have been here a while, and have not yet joined the WGA, please consider doing so before the season starts so you won't miss any of the fun weekly and special events. You can find information and download the WGA application by logging in to the Tonto Verde website - www.tontoverde.org. Just go to the golf section and open the Women's Golf Association tab. If you have additional questions, don't hesitate to contact any of the WGA board members. Looking forward to seeing you on the tee.
