From The President

The Board of Directors met on April 30, 2015 in regular session.  The agenda was full as it often is the last meeting of the season before we all scatter.  The Board will meet as required by teleconference during the summer months. The following is a summary of the meeting.

Budget:  The Financial Operations Committee recommended the 2015-16 budget.  It includes NO dues increase and a recommendation for a $25/month increase in the capital assessment.  Unanimously approved.  Further information can be found in the Annual Notice to Members sent May 8th.

Membership Plans:  The Membership Committee presented numerous technical changes and new fees for various categories.  The new plans will be posted on the website when fully complete.  Unanimously approved.

Organization Chart - I presented the organization chart recommended for the upcoming year.  Unanimously approved.

I reported that after some analysis of our data base we identified some pieces of relevant demographic information for golf membership (in years):

Average Member Age

69.8

Average tenure of membership

10.4

Average Age of New Members last year

63

We will be looking deeper into this data, identifying trends and other information to help us make better decisions.

Have a great summer whether you travel to other parts or spend your time in Arizona.

Notes From Your Pro

Greetings golf members. As we begin to transition seasons there are several operational adjustments that you should be aware of. The Golf Shop Summer Hours will have started by the time you're reading this newsletter. We will be open Wednesday - Sunday from 6am-3pm through the month of September. Although the Golf Shop is closed on Monday's and Tuesday's, we will continue to have a staff member on duty to set the range, fill water coolers, facilitate daily play and perform other duties as assigned.

Our summer reciprocal program is kicking off this month. A list of reciprocal clubs is now published on the golf home page and will be updated as we receive confirmation on a few pending agreements. The no charge reciprocal deal with Rio Verde will run from June 15th - September 15th. Tee times inquiries must be made through our Golf Shop and can only be made three days in advance on a space available basis.

A few other random but noteworthy items:

  • Your weekly tee time booking window has been adjusted to open up an hour earlier at 6:00am through the summer months.
  • The early morning play policy will continue to affect those of you that enjoy chasing the dew off the course. We ask that the lead group (6:33 tee time) adhere to a three-hour pace or skip completely around the maintenance crew.
  • Guest fees are currently $45 and will bottom out at $25 beginning May 18th.
  • All demo clubs in the golf shop are currently on sale from 10 - 30% off depending on condition.
  • A 2015-2016 season golf calendar is now available on the golf home page.

Until next time, keep em' flying long and straight!

As I write this month's article, most members have either left Tonto Verde or are in the process of leaving for the summer months.  I wish you safe travels and enjoy your time away in a cooler climate.

On the bunker front, one change that I have implemented is bunker rake placement.  And yes, from what I have heard, the placement of the rakes has changed often over the years.  What I proposed to the Greens Committee and started doing was to put half the rakes in the bunkers at a 50 degree angle with the handles sticking out.  This makes it easier for mowers to get around the bunkers.  The details around the bunkers also look more complete with this placement.  As we rake the bunkers in the morning, we place the rakes in this manner near the access points of each bunker, thus doing away with the blue dots.

As part of the summer maintenance of the golf courses, I have listed the closures of each course through overseeding.  These closures allow us to perform some pretty aggressive cultural practices without disrupting play.  The most disruptive practice would be aerification of greens, tees and fairways.  We also plan on working on a few bunkers on each course by adding new sand.

                  Overseed                September 21 - October 11           Peaks

                                                October 12 - November 1              Ranch

Both courses will be opened November 2nd with carts on paths for 3 - 4 weeks depending on turf conditions/weather.

This past week, Landscapes Unlimited started swapping out the fairway irrigation heads on the Peaks course.  At the pace they are going, I would anticipate them being done around the 1st week in June.  This project will greatly improve the irrigation efficiency by ensuring each head is the same type and configured correctly.  As of now, there are several different types of heads and nozzle configurations that either put out too much water, or throw water beyond the target.  We are also going to look at performing a nozzle audit on the remaining rough heads to ensure better uniformity.

On a productivity/accounting front, I have added a new digital job board to the Golf Course Maintenance facility.  This allows us to schedule tasks for the crew using any device that has internet connectivity.  We can make changes as we see them in the field.  It also allows us the ability to track expenses for each task and area of the golf course.  So in a year's time, I will be able to run reports on the true cost of golf course maintenance

operations.  For example and past experience:  we schedule 3 associates to rake bunkers per course per day.  This system will track those hours along with each associates wage to return the true cost of how much it cost to rake bunkers per year.  And believe me, that number is surprising being that the bunkers are a hazard.

Until next season following overseeding, I look forward to everyone's return after a busy and productive summer for Golf Course Maintenance.

Keep it in the short grass,

Travis Blamires

Golf Course Superintendent

From The Golf Committee

At our April 27th meeting, the Golf Committee approved the marking and designation of the washes to the left of #9 Ranch and between #9 and #10 Peaks as lateral water hazards.  Lateral water hazards (whether they have water in them or not) are marked with a red line and/or red stakes.  Regular water hazards are marked with a yellow line and/or yellow stakes.  The washes that run across #8 and #9 Ranch fairways are regular water hazards. #15 Ranch and #5 Peaks are lateral water hazards. By the time you read this, most of the new markings will be done.

There are different options for relief from lateral water hazards than from regular water hazards.  The first three options are the same for both situations.

Regular Water Hazard Rules offer the golfer the following options for relief:

1. Play the ball from within the hazard as it lies without grounding your club. No penalty

2. Replay your shot from the spot where it was last played. 1-shot penalty

3. Play a shot from any point along a line that extends from the hole back through the point that the ball

last crossed the margin of the hazard yet no closer to the hole than the point that the ball last crossed

     the hazard. 1-shot penalty

Lateral water hazard rules offer the golfer the following options for relief:

1. Play the ball from within the hazard as it lies without grounding your club. No penalty

2. Replay your shot from the spot where it was last played. 1-shot penalty

3. Play a shot from any point along a line that extends from the hole back through the point that the ball

last crossed the margin of the hazard yet no closer to the hole than the point that the ball last crossed            the hazard. 1-shot penalty

4. Drop a ball that is no more than 2-club lengths form the point that the ball last crossed the hazard yet

no closer to the hole. 1-shot penalty

5. Follow the same procedure as in #4 above yet dropping from a point that is equidistance from the

hole yet on the opposite side of the hazard. 1-shot penalty

It is the hope of the golf committee that Jeff and his staff will use their considerable talents to video some on course rules situations that we can post on the TV web site.

Enjoy your summer!

MGA Cup

Since the inception of the MGA Cup, participation in MGA events have steadily increased.  Thank You!   Your MGA board met, discussed, and voted to increase the MGA Cup field to 60 and ties, up from 48 and ties.

Dues Increase

As a follow-up to increasing the MGA Cup playoff to 60 and ties, it was felt we could fund all of the increase cost ($600) with a $5 dues increase for next season. This allows us to keep the existing event cost structure in place to partially fund the MGA Cup.  A motion was made and seconded to increase the yearly MGA dues from $35 a year to $40 a year.
