Amended Bylaws/Election of Directors Approval

Last week a cover letter explaining the process for approving amended Bylaws and election of directors was mailed to member's billing address.   When Consent Forms from a majority of the Regular Memberships are received, the President of Tonto Verde Golf Club, Inc., is authorized and directed to sign the Amended and Restated Bylaws, certifying their adoption and to certify the election of directors.  A majority of 193 Regular Members is required.

Please consider your consent to the items seriously.  You have two options to deliver your Consent Forms to the Golf Club.  First is to place your forms in the drop box in the Pro Shop.  The second option is to mail your forms to Sherry Dee, Tonto Verde Golf Club, 26604 N. Forest Road Rio Verde, AZ  85263.

From The President

The regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Directors was held on February 26th.  No substantive Action Items were on the agenda and reports are summarized below.  The full minutes can be found on the website.

New Superintendent - Travis Blamires was introduced to the Board as our new Golf Course Superintendent.  Travis began work on February 23rd and is quickly assimilating his new position.  We are all supportive of his success.

Branding Task Force - The group is working with golf member/resident Joe Duffy, Duffy & Partners, to evaluate progress and findings.  Our brand should be about everything touched by members and prospects, and needs to be forward-looking.  A report is expected for the April Board meeting.

Electric Cart Facility - We were recently informed by the TVA that the proposed location of the electric cart facility at the east end parking lot is not in compliance with the number of parking spaces required by Maricopa County.  The result is that we cannot build on the parking lot.  We understand the complexities of this issue and support the TVA leadership's decision.  Other locations are being investigated including the area west of the putting green on TVGC property.  It appears the power issue may not be as big a hurdle as originally thought.  We expect a positive outcome and will keep you informed as things progress.

Membership - A new member reception is planned for March 13th to welcome those who have joined the golf club this year.

Other Items:  I have been asked to let the membership know of the following:

The community needs volunteers to support our Tonto-On-Display Open House Tour committee.  We have 60 signs to put up and take down the day of the events (Saturday March 14 & 28).   Help is needed to divide and conquer the task of placing signs on the roads leading into Tonto Verde plus within the community directing visitors to the Homes on Tour.   Please call Jerri Dann at 471-0185 or email her at JerriDann@gmail.com.

We have been experiencing an issue with event flyers put up in the golf course bathrooms, including the ones in the tunnel.  They are being taken down prior to the close of registration for the event.  The TVA and TVGC cleaning staffs are not touching these flyers, but they still disappear. I ask all members to do their part and not remove flyers from the bathrooms. If you would like a copy of a flyer for some reason, they will be available in the Golf Shop.  Thanks for the help.

Official Meeting Notice

A Town Hall Meeting will be held on March 27 at 3:00 - 5:00 pm, at which time we will discuss the current state of the TV Golf Club and our future plans.  This will be held at the Rio Verde Community Church.

Notice is hereby given that the Annual Meeting of the Regular Members of the Tonto Verde Golf Club, Inc. will be held at 8:00 am on April 2, 2015 in the multipurpose room of the Tonto Verde Clubhouse, 18401 El Circulo Drive, Rio Verde, Arizona.  The only item of business to be conducted is to tally the Consent Forms for the election of three new members of the Board of Directors.  You are welcome to attend but the meeting is planned to be short and there will be no presentations or votes.

Notes From Your Pro

Greetings golf members! We're approaching the heart of our tournament schedule so there's still plenty of opportunities to satisfy your competitive appetites. If you're hosting guests, plan accordingly and let me or my staff know if we can help you secure a tee time. Congratulations to Marsha Heitzman for running the gauntlet that was the WGA Championship Flight Match Play! This is her first major championship at Tonto and she'll have a chance to double dip next month in the WGA Stroke Play tournament.

It's also spring break season which means the community will experience an influx of young visitors over the next several weeks. Our golf professionals have put together a series of junior golf clinics that are available to kids of all ability levels between the ages of 5-15. Kids will be divided into small groups based on age and rotate through different practice stations. The six clinics currently scheduled are on the following Wednesday or Friday afternoons (3-4pm): 3/11, 3/20, 3/25, 3/27, 4/1 and 4/3. Sign up your junior on Foretees or through the golf shop today.

There are several merchandise deals worth noting in the golf shop this month. All footwear is 30% off for the month of March. Ordering three dozen personalized Titleist Pro V1 golf balls will earn you a fourth dozen with the same imprint at no charge. FootJoy is also running a "Buy 5 Get 1 Free" deal on their popular StaSof Gloves. On Tuesday, March 17th there will be a ladies accessories trunk show on the Mesquite Grill patio from 4-6pm. Lastly, anyone interested in wedge fitting should consider signing up for an appointment with Cleveland on Friday, March 20th between 10-3pm.

I'd like to recognize our employee of the month for March, Assistant Professional Cory Moran. Since starting in early November, Cory acclimated quickly to the unique culture at Tonto Verde and steadily proved that he was capable of taking on additional responsibilities. His professional instincts, positive attitude and willingness to help with literally anything are of tremendous value to our team.

March Madness is just around the corner and we'll be having our annual bracket challenge after the tournament is set on selection Sunday. Whether you watch college basketball or are just a sucker for some action, fill out a bracket and have some fun following the games.

Until next time, keep 'em flying long and straight!

As I write this newsletter, I am finishing up my 2nd week at the club.  My family and I couldn't be happier to be back in Arizona.  And I would like to thank everyone at Tonto Verde for being so welcoming and inviting while I get to know the property and members.

A little bit about myself.  My wife, Amy, and I are originally from Jerome, Idaho, which is a small farm town in Southern Idaho.  We have 2 children, Ellie (9) and Ayden (6) who keep us very busy with school and outside activities.  I have been involved in the golf industry since I was 14 years old, working on a small country club after school.   I attended Boise State University and pursued a B.S. in Biology, all while working on a golf course.  Upon completion of my degree, I enrolled in the 2-year Turfgrass Management Program at The Pennsylvania State University.  We moved to Scottsdale after graduation and I was rehired at Troon North after my internship the previous summer.  Troon Golf was a small company at the time, and I was given the opportunity to move around the Western US, and served as Superintendent in locations in California, Idaho, and had the privilege of going to Paradise Island, Bahamas and redoing a portion of the golf course.  Most recently, I was at The Club at Morningside in Rancho Mirage, California.  But as I stated before, we are happy to be back in Arizona, and would like to call it "home".

As far as maintenance on the golf courses goes, I am currently in the learning and watching phase.  I am gathering information needed to help me create schedules and agronomic plans to manage soil conditions, plant health, and overall playability.  I have started by taking soil and water samples to give me a baseline of what the soil is telling me and how to best manage any issues that may show up.  I am also interviewing Assistant candidates to help me best manage both golf courses, which I should have in place by the first part of April.  The biggest piece of the puzzle is getting to know the maintenance associate's names and their abilities.  Without them, none of the plans I put in place would be put into action.

With the help of the Board of Directors, Green's Committee and other members, I have been enlightened on what has happened at Tonto Verde and what is in the planning phase in the coming months and years.  I am excited to work with a great group of people who take pride in their club and want nothing but the best for the membership and the club.

I look forward to the future and getting to know the membership at Tonto Verde.

Keep it in the green grass.

Travis Blamires

Golf Course Superintendent

From The Handicap Committee

The Handicap Committee continues to be questioned on why we are encouraging our members to post all rounds played.

The USGA requires that a golf club must have a Handicap Committee. Its job is  to ensure the integrity of the USGA Handicap System.

The Committee's responsibilities are to make the game of golf more enjoyable by enabling players of differing abilities to compete on an equitable basis.

Enforcing these guidelines from the USGA is for the betterment of our club and its members.

Did You Know

Golf tradition is based on honor, integrity, and sportsmanship.  One foundation of this tradition is the Handicap System.  It provides for equal and fair competition.  The Golf Board, the Golf Committee and the three Associations are responsible for Policy and the Rules to enforce policy. We all want to maintain a "fair and level" playing field for all member competitions.  The respective Handicap Chairs of the Associations regularly audit the posting of scores.  They check on the timing and the accuracy of scores posted.

1. Scores should be posted within 72 hours of play.

2. Scores should be accurate within USGA guidelines and rules of equitable stroke scoring.

Most of our golfers post timely and accurate scores. Some are remiss on one or both aspects.

Don't Forget!
It's that time of the year again. Yeah, the Bermuda grass on both courses is dormant and has "no defense" against golf cart traffic. So please follow these directions. Take the cart path until you are 90 degrees from the first ball. Cross the Bermuda rough and stay in the fairway until the last ball by a player in the cart has been played. Then follow the cart signs or proceed at 90 degrees back to the cart path. Apart from what is necessary to enter and exit the fairway please stay out of the rough. Also, do not sand any divots in the rough. Simple enough and everyone's cooperation will make for a better course as the Bermuda comes back to life in the spring.  THANK YOU!
