It's that time of the year again. Yeah, the Bermuda grass on both courses is dormant and has "no defense" against golf cart traffic. So please follow these directions. Take the cart path until you are 90 degrees from the first ball. Cross the Bermuda rough and stay in the fairway until the last ball by a player in the cart has been played. Then follow the cart signs or proceed at 90 degrees back to the cart path. Apart from what is necessary to enter and exit the fairway please stay out of the rough. Also, do not sand any divots in the rough. Simple enough and everyone's cooperation will make for a better course as the Bermuda comes back to life in the spring. THANK YOU!

 | From The President |
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Directors was held on Thursday, December 4th. Board actions and reports included:
Irrigation Report & Expenditure Approval - Jim Uffelman, Green Committee Chair, reported on the results of the Peaks irrigation system audit. Five critical functions were discussed and findings made.
Critical Area
|
Finding
|
Water Quality
|
Ok - Reenergize "Boot the Salt" program
|
Pumping System
|
OK - Three new pumps and motors installed. Capacity increased from 1,700 to 2,400 gpm. Watering time reduced by 30%.
|
Piping
System
|
Mainline structure should be serviceable for 5-10 years. Isolation valves failing and need replacing. Develop plan.
|
Sprinkler System
|
Current sprinklers are 21 years old and have exceeded a useful life of 12-15 years. Sample test results for coverage were predominantly poor.
|
Controls &
Software
System
|
The control system is the heart of the irrigation system. Our system of 45 controllers (satellites) is inefficient and technologically out of date. The Network 8000 has been out of production for several years and replacement parts are difficult to find.
|
- Motion: Authorize up to $250,000 for 300 sprinkler heads, 45 controllers and the Lynx Central Software system. Work includes an estimate for labor and will begin in May. Unanimously approved.
Electric Carts Report and Approval
After more than six months of review and analysis this project is finally nearing completion as the Tonto Verde Association approved the east end of the parking lot as a satisfactory location for the electric cart facility, subject to design review approval. Dave Burns, assisted by Rich Varda, Nigel Finney, Jeff Ostlund and contractor Brian Curtis developed conceptual drawings and cost estimates and presented them to the Board. Final details will be agreed to shortly.
- Motion: Authorize up to $150,000 to construct an electric cart storage facility at the east end of the parking lot subject to design review approval and final structure details. Unanimously approved.
Capital Reserve Fund
Subsequent to the two major capital expenditures approval, funding of the projects was authorized from the Capital Reserve Fund. Unanimously approved.
TVGC Branding
In light of the increased competition in this market, including Shea Homes at the Vista Verde community, we have established a taskforce to look the TVGC Brand. The objective will be to determine "who we are" and "what we want to be known for". With this perspective, we will develop messaging to reenergize the TVGC brand. Russ Chance, Gregg Libbey and Kathie Sankey will participate in the task force, coordinated by Marianne Cooper. Joe Duffy has agreed to assist us as an advisor.
Mike Morehouse will be heading our Nominating Committee for 2015. Mike will finalize the committee membership and communicating with the community as this process moves forward.
The "Working Together for Community Success" work group has begun meeting. Representing the TVGC are Clarence Hein, Jay Simons and Susan Warzecka. The TVA is represented by Pat Crockett, Dick Siebel and Linda Wax. Meetings are scheduled for the first and third Monday of the month. Reports will be made when appropriate

 | Notes From Your Pro | Greetings golf members. Course conditions are excellent and there's still time to play your best round of 2014. Be aware that frost delay season is upon us and the staff will keep you completely updated on the Golf Home Page as well as through email if your name is on the tee sheet on the day of a delay. Shoulder season guest rates ($70 regularly; $55 twilight and $50 all day on Sundays) are valid through the end of the month so take advantage and give your friends and/or family the Tonto experience this holiday season. If you've played early in the morning you've likely noticed how pristine the greens look after they've been freshly cut and rolled. Please do your part to help keep them looking this way throughout the day by picking up your feet and repairing any ball marks that you come across. Morning golfers should also be aware of the Early Play Policy that was adopted by the Club this fall. Click Here to read the policy. Saturday, December 13th will be the last double-tee start with crossovers on the Peaks for a few weeks. They will resume on Saturday, January 10th when the volume of play makes it necessary for us to utilize this model. The golf shop will be running our annual Holiday Sale on Thursday, December 11th from 3:00 - 5:30pm. Stop in for some complimentary wine, holiday treats and "Happy Hour" pricing on all merchandise in the shop. Our staff would like to thank all the members who participated in the Employee-Member Scramble on Monday, December 8th. It's an event we all look forward to each year and it wouldn't be possible without your support. While on the topic of staff, I'd like to recognize our Employee of the month for December...Justin Davis. His tireless work ethic, willingness to take on big challenges and composure in pressure situations are qualities that put Justin in an elite class of Assistant Golf Professionals. We continue to be grateful for his support as the day is not far off that he'll be called upon to become the director of a major golf operation. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy holiday season...Until next time, keep em flying long and straight!

 | From The Golf Committee |
Just a reminder for those lucky enough to get a hole in one. Please come to the clubhouse after your round. The free drinks don't start until you show your face in the bar so please, even if you aren't staying, make an appearance so the rest of your buddies can celebrate your good fortune!
We have declared a section of the Peaks golf course to be "ground under repair" behind the #13 green. This is the area where a large bunker was removed this summer. The new sod has not grown in as quickly as we had hoped so this area is now considered "ground under repair" and you may take a free drop into either one of the two drop zones now provided on either side of this hill. The ground under repair is where the new sod starts and ends. A sign will be installed shortly at the back of the green.
Also note that Dean and his crews are rolling the greens after mowing each course. This is improving the surface of the greens to keep them "true" and a bit quicker. However, spike marks have become very visible. Please - after you have finished putting out - tamp these marks down for the benefit of those playing behind your group.
Enjoy the beautiful weather and conditions of our golf courses! Thanks Dean and your crews for all your hard work to keep this such a special place.

News, Updates and Corrections from the WGA:
Dates to remember:
December 20th and January 6th.
Why, you might ask??? Because these are the dates to SIGN UP for the ...
Ladies Verde Mixer: Sign up starts on December 20th at 7:00 AM and the
Four Member Tournament and the Match Play Tournament sign up for both at 7:00 AM on January 6th.
More info: Ladies Verde Mixer, "Howdy Neighbor!" is a 12:00 shotgun here in Tonto on January 20. Sign up on ForeTees (our Tonto Verde Website) and Golf Shop staff will do the pairings. There's a limit per club of only 48 players each (48 from Tonto, 48 from Rio). A cocktail (no-host bar) and appetizer hour after play in our lovely Tonto Verde Clubhouse. Four Member Tournament ... just as the name implies is a tournament with 4 of your "fav's" from the WGA. Dates are Tues. and Thurs., February 3rd and 5th. A Progressive Net Best Ball with 4 flights of 6 teams/flight and first and second best teams of each flight winning golf shop credit. It's FUN, it's challenging and it's competitive in the friendliest way. You'll love it! Don't already have a foursome? Call Angela in the Golf Shop (471-2710) and let her know you'd like to play. Easy-Peasy! Click Here to view "The Four Friends" flyer. Maximum teams: 24.
Match Play Tournament begins January 27th ... more info available in future Divot Digests and Updates and on the Tonto Verde Website.
Too early to talk about the January General Meeting and Brunch with a noon shotgun? Probably, but note the date anyway ... Tuesday, January 13th!
Other news and dates to consider: Our Annual Hohokam Classic Invitational is scheduled March 18th and 19th with a practice round on the 15th, 16th or 17th. More information on this in the future, as well. Psssst ... the theme, "Another Day in Paradise" promises to be a fun event. Put it on your calendar and think about who you'll invite!
Any questions about Handicapping or your particular handicap can now be answered directly with an email inquiry to handicapcommittee@Tontogolf.com.
A correction and apology: The Overall Winners of the 2014 Member/Member Tournament held November 18th & 20th were Cindi Pendergraft and Gloria McCoy with a two-day Low-Net team score of 57. It was reported that Nancy Updegraff and Marsha Heitzman were winners with a Low Gross score of 72 but that was only recorded after Day 1 play and should not have been recognized as the winning score for the two day event. Congratulations to Cindi and Gloria for a terrific two days of play! So sorry for the mistake in the last Divot Update.
Many kudos go out to Christie Gorsline and her team of "elves" for a terrific one-day Member/Guest held last Tuesday. "Santa's Secret" had a field of 92 ladies who marched around the Peaks course in holiday spirit with 3 different formats. Sound confusing? It wasn't at all! Christie and Angela (our WGA "go-to gal" from the Golf Shop) did a wonderful job outlining the scorecards for all players. If you want the results of the days play go to "League Results" on our website. Way-too-many winners to list here. A fun evening of sharing ... and I mean sharing! ... of the wine was had by all. Thanks Christie, and all others involved, for a delightful day!
Joyce Snyder, a former member of our WGA passed away on November 14th in Scottsdale. A Memorial Service for Joyce will be held at the Community Church of the Verdes on Saturday, December 13th at 10:30 AM with reception to follow at the Tonto Verde Clubhouse.
If you know of information to be reported to our WGA membership and/or recognized with correspondence in the way of sympathy or get well cards from a WGA representative please let Cindy Carlson know at cdham116@aol.com. Thank you.
Many of our members are leaving or have already left for northern "digs" and holiday celebrations elsewhere. May we wish safe travels and the Happiest of Holiday Seasons to you all! For those still here ... Let's play golf!

It's time to sign up for the Couples Match Play Tournament which will run from Jan. 1 to April 1. Each couple will be assigned a flight according to combined handicap of man and woman. Couples will arrange their own matches some time during that 3-month time period. Each player will be able to commit to a set of tees on each course before the tournament begins, and the Pro Shop will adjust handicaps accordingly.
