Lakeview Pantry
August 2013

The month of August has been music to our ears at Lakeview Pantry!

In the words of J.R.R. Tolkien, "If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world."

The pantry is full of both food and song these days, as we are taking part in several music events, and you have the opportunity to join us in the merriment.

Below, you will read about one of our donors, Crystal Bowersox of American Idol, read about three concerts benefiting Lakeview Pantry, as well as read about an opportunity to win tickets to a Sammy Hagar Show! Any donation over this weekend in response to the newsletter will automatically be entered in a raffle to win two tickets to his show at Northerly Island, next Friday, August 23rd.

We hope you consider making your gift now during the month of August, to help fight hunger and to feed our neighbors. As in the words of George Bernard Shaw, Playwright, Music Critic, and Political Activist, "There is no sincerer love than the love of food." www.lakeviewpantry.org/donate

Sincerely,

Gary Garland

Community Feature: Crystal Bowersox

Lakeview Pantry was lucky enough to interview Crystal Bowersox, a former client  and volunteer at Lakeview Pantry, who is now a major donor.

Crystal Bowersox, the runner-up on the ninth season of American Idol, states that she works hard to support the social services organizations that she believes in because "I have a megaphone now, so I'm going to use it."

When we think of American Idol, we think of fame, success, and a wealth of strong vocal artists; we often don't think of the artists' roots or beginnings, and the stepping stones that get them there.

Community Feature: Chloe and the Baskes Family

As a food pantry, common donations include food items or financial gifts, but one donor and her family, Chloe Baskes, found a fun and inspiring way to combine these two things!

The Baskes family has long been involved with the pantry, and daughter Chloe wanted to do something unique as part of her Bat Mitzvah.  Chloe decided to take on a new project for Lakeview Pantry and join in on the fight against hunger.

Chloe and her family baked a variety of homemade goodies, and sold beautifully packaged boxes of several different baked goods to their friends and family, donating proceeds to Lakeview Pantry. Full Story.

To follow in Chloe's footsteps, donate here.

This month Lakeview Pantry released a thought-provoking story detailing the struggles of the recent Dan Baker. As a neighbor and a friend to many, this piece serves as both a tribute and a look at the gaps in social service coordination.
