October 2012

Greetings!

We're gearing up for a busy season at Lakeview Pantry. The holidays will be here before we know it! It's been a busy fall, and there are many community partners we would like to thank for making our work possible.

I'd like to thank Mike Impola and the folks at Jewel-Osco for their incredible work during National Hunger Action Month last month. They raised and donated 9,050 pounds of food to Lakeview Pantry! Please see the article below to learn more about their impact.

Last month, we also held a recognition event for our Pantry Partners, our monthly donors here at Lakeview Pantry. Thanks to their monthly gifts, we're able to offer consistent services all year round and keep our administrative costs low.

We've also partnered with Artizone Chicago as the October-December beneficiary for their Part of the Loop project. Please check out their website and support Lakeview Pantry!

Lastly, please save the date for Lakeview Pantry's Young Leaders Board 2nd Annual Eliminate Hunger Social. Last year's inaugural event was a success, and we hope to raise even more funds at this year's event. The evening will feature cocktails, hors'd oeuvres, and raffle drawings throughout the night. Join us with our emcee, NBC 5's Anthony Ponce, for a fun-filled evening!

Have a Happy Halloween, and I hope to see you all at the Eliminate Hunger Social on November 9!

Sincerely,

Gary Garland

Executive Director

Lakeview Pantry would like to thank Jewel-Osco for their phenomenal efforts in collecting food during their many food drives and sidewalk sales throughout September.  Between the three locations at 3531 N. Broadway, 3630 N. Southport, and 2940 N. Ashland, the stores collected 9,050 pounds of food for Lakeview Pantry,

Thanks to everyone who donated to each event and a special thank you to Mike Impola for his continued commitment to Lakeview Pantry.
Lakeview Pantry Is Now Part of the Loop

Lakeview Pantry has partnered with Artizone Chicago and is the October-December beneficiary of the Part of the Loop program, which benefits charitable organizations in the Chicago area. Of the many local organizations from which to choose, Artizone Chicago selected Lakeview Pantry as a result of a handshake and the grocery delivery company's desire to do community outreach.

The program is simple. Any Artizone Chicago customer who checks the "I want to be Part of the Loop" box and makes a purchase will be counted in the campaign.  For every 250 customers, Artizone Chicago will donate $1,000 to Lakeview Pantry. That's in addition to the initial $1,000 that Artizone has already donated. We are very excited to be a part of this excellent opportunity.

Become Part of the Loop and enjoy the convenience of home grocery delivery while helping Lakeview Pantry! Start your your shopping with coupon code: LVP2EYFNPC. Take $5.95 off any order of $40 or more through Wednesday, October 17!

Can the Local Food Movement Include the Low-income As Well?

Local food movement is a commonly used phrase these days, but what does it really mean?

Local food movement is a collaborative effort to build more locally based, self-reliant food economies - one in which sustainable food production, processing, distribution, and consumption is integrated to enhance the economic, environmental and social health of a particular place.

The movement is all about growing, selling, buying and eating fresh local produce. The movement has gained some momentum in Chicago like many more cities with the growth of local farmers' markets, fresh produce carts, urban agricultural initiatives and other innovative food distribution models like the Top Box Foods.
