July 2012

Greetings!

A record hot July is upon us, and we hope you're enjoying your summer and finding ways to beat the heat.  The summer season is a busy one for Lakeview Pantry staff and volunteers as we plan and prepare for upcoming events and programs.

Our annual raffle has begun, and it's a wonderful opportunity to help the community and have a chance to win $5,000! Tickets are $50 each and only 500 tickets will be sold. The lucky winning tickets will be drawn on Friday, September 7. For the price of dinner and a movie, your gift will go a long way in helping our neighbors in need. You can purchase raffle tickets on our website. Be sure to type "raffle tickets" in the comments section.

Thank you to everyone for your support and encouragement leading up to and throughout my 50-mile walk from Kenosha to Chicago. Your energy and enthusiasm helped our neighbors in need and me every step of the way, and for that, I'm grateful.

In total, 158 donors raised $28,505 for our emergency food distribution and case management programs! Thanks to all the local businesses who became Mile Sponsors: Lake View Dental Associates, Healthy Smiles, and Cortez Law Office.

To all of our Lakeview Pantry and 50 for Food supporters, thank you for being committed to our community.

Meet Evie: Lakeview Pantry's Littlest Hero

Many adults could le
arn a lesson or two about giving from the littlest among us.  The Lakeview Pantry staff was delighted to have recently received a special visit from 5 1/2 year old Evie.  During this year's Chicago Pride Parade, Evie set up a lemonade stand.
When she was done, she had collected $327 for Lakeview Pantry!

Her mother, Beth, acknowledges that she never once thought of keeping the money for herself, and she was determined to donate the entire amount to those in need.  Thank you, Evie, for setting an example we all can follow.

Stories from Morocco

Director of Volunteers Erin Stephens recently completed an international exchange through Heartland International and the US State Department called Legislative Fellows: Emerging Leaders from Morocco, Egypt, and the US.  Read as she shares her blog and photos from Morocco.

By Erin Stephens

In June, I had the opportunity to be part of a fellowship that took me to Morocco for two weeks. While overseas, I learned about Morocco's culture and current political, social, and economic issues. My journey to Morocco began months ago in Chicago.   Read more >>

Uptown Farmers Market Now Accepting Link Card

Weiss farmers market, Chicago's only hospital-based farmers market, is now accepting Link cards as payment for produce and other items sold at the market. Anyone approved to receive cash assistance or SNAP (food stamps) benefits is issued an Illinois Link card. The Link card looks and works like a debit card.

Thanks to the Wholesome LINK Campaign for promoting Link access at the Uptown Farmer's Market managed by the Vanguard Weiss Memorial hospital, to get healthier foods to a group of people who may not otherwise have financial access to farm fresh foods. The campaign was started by a group of community members affiliated with Ezra and Mercy Housing Tenant Leadership, as well as other community supporters.  Read more >>
