President's Message

I hope that you are enjoying your summer, and what a wonderful one it has been, so far!

I want to use this President's Message to update you on just a few of the many things that the Washington Massage Association: AMTA Washington Chapter has been working on, on your behalf since the last E-News was delivered to your inbox.

May 1-3, at the Annual Chapter Convention we provided Continuing Education, Community, Unity, Networking and FUN to almost 400 attendees over three days. 40 of these attendees went home qualified to receive their Intra-Oral Endorsement from the State of Washington! And, believe it or not, we are already hard at work, planning not only the 2015 Convention but also the 2016 Educational Conference, more on both of these events to come.

Also in May, Health and Human Services (HHS) sent out a request for comment on Section 2706 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA/Obama Care). Not only did the national branch of AMTA send comment but this association sent comment. We also helped YOU, as individual LMPs, to send comment, by providing you with information and text that would help you to craft a response. Thank you, to all of you who added your voice to that of your professional association in the ongoing job of protecting and promoting the massage profession. Together our voice has a powerful impact!

As we work our way through the second half of the year (can that be?) our focus will continue to be on excellence, in the execution of all of our Programs that serve you, our loyal members. We also will continue to reach out to the greater massage community; non-members, massage schools, massage educators, massage products businesses, other health care providers, leaders in local and state government and anyone else who is a stakeholder in the massage profession in WA. We want ALL of you to engage, be invested and feel a part of this amazing community and all of the work that we are doing to secure the future of the massage profession.

If you have any comments, questions or ideas about how we, as a strong community of massage practitioners, can work to move our profession forward, please contact me or any of your other Board of Directors. Click here for our email addresses.

Have a GREAT summer.

Chapter Planning Conference

On June 21st Washington chapter board members and program directors met and envisioned big plans for the chapter, then whittled those ideas into manageable tasks and projects. The big accomplishment of the day was creating job descriptions for volunteers to help turn those plans into action. This makes it possible for eager volunteers to browse opportunities, large and small, and find the perfect match for their skills and level of commitment. It also helps all leaders hunt for and "swoop" potential volunteers by defining what kind of help different programs are looking for.

Other highlights of the day were petting turtles in the lily pond, eating delicious chocolate vegan cupcakes and realizing that we can accomplish our goals for the chapter if we build the capacity to welcome new volunteers into this amazing group of people.

Look for volunteer opportunities coming soon on the chapter website. Many new volunteer job descriptions are being written. We will let you know when they are posted.

"Throwback Thursday"

Just like the comeback of leg warmers and neon clothes, we brought back the wooden seated massage chair.  On May 17th and 18th at Alexandar School of Natural Therapeutics, in Tacoma we fetched a relic to share with massage students.

Loving known as "grandpa", the 1989 wooden massage chair was shared with future massage therapists, courtesy of Steve Wooding.  Over 45 massage students were able to experience the artifact first-hand while taking on-site seated chair massage.
The course is part of the standard curriculum at Alexandar's.  Instructors Linda Bucher and Christine Uhl thought it would bring a different experience to the class and make it more interactive.
