Lake Erie Phosphorus Reduction Strategy Meetings
As part of an industry-wide effort to address nutrient runoff issues in the Great Lakes and other waterways, Farm & Food Care Ontario coordinated three meetings with stakeholders from in and outside of the agriculture industry. The three meetings addressed the agricultural response to the proposed 40% reduction rarget of phosphorus leaching into the western basin of Lake Erie.

The first two meetings occurred on July 14 and August 10 in Guelph, and explored opportunities for and barriers to minimizing the role of agriculture in aquatic nutrient pollution. The third and final meeting took place on August 18.

As the implementation of reduction strategies and programs for farms in the Lake Erie Watershed nears, Farm & Food Care Ontario will continue to work on this issue with plans for another meeting this fall.

For details on the events and presentation files from each speaker, visit Farm & Food Care Ontario's environment page. For further information, email Bruce Kelly at bruce@farmfoodcare.org.

Farm & Food Care Canada's Evening with Temple Grandin
A sold-out crowd of 250 filled War Memorial Hall at the University of Guelph on August 27 to hear world-renowned animal behaviourist Dr. Temple Grandin give a keynote presentation.

Dr. Grandin addressed the audience for an hour, talking on the subject of how different minds solve problems. She then met with attendees during a reception following her presentation.

Dr. Grandin has developed humane livestock handling systems, and has worked as a consultant to the livestock handling industry on animal care standards. She has, in addition, designed processing facilities in which half the cattle in the United States are handled while working for Burger King, McDonalds, Swift and others.
