If you are active online, be ready to take the bad with the good. Social media is a great way to share your farm story, but it sometimes brings comments from activists.

Remember that they are not going to be swayed, and there are many others who are truly interested in your story. Learn how to mute or block the activists, ignore the negative comments, and keep sharing.

Local Food Week: June 1-7, 2015

Local Food Week 2015 is coming to Ontario on June 1-7 this year, providing a great opportunity for residents across the province to celebrate their passion for Ontario food and farming.

For the second year in a row, Farm & Food Care Ontario is partnering with Foodland Ontario to spread the word about Local Food Week. Visit www.loveontfood.ca to see or post upcoming local food events, web links and other local food resources.

Here are some quick tips on how you can take part in the Local Food Week celebration, both during the week and all year long:
  • Social media: Join Foodland Ontario on June 3 at 8:00 pm for a #loveONTfood Twitter Party, and include #loveONTfood in all your social media sharing. Watch www.loveONTfood.ca for your chance to register.
  • Roadside signs and posters: Do you or anyone you know have a road sign or counter space for signage? Proudly tell those driving by or visiting to "Celebrate local food!" and include the website or hashtag in your message.
  • Websites and advertisements: If you have a website, blog, or any advertising options, visit www.loveONTfood.ca to download and include a local food celebration button or other graphics.
  • Your ideas here... Think creative and fun. Share what you did or plan to do to celebrate local food by email at info@farmfoodcare.org or by using the #loveONTfood hashtag.
  • Tour a farm: Visit www.VirtualFarmTours.ca to find out more about how food is produced here at home.
  • Support your local farmers: Choose Ontario products all year long.
The annual Ontario Agriculture Week, scheduled for this coming October 4 -10, will be another opportunity to boost our collective efforts in support of Ontario farmers and the food they produce.
Industry connects at Farm & Food Care Ontario's Annual General Meeting

With over 200 industry partners in attendance over two days, Farm & Food Care's 2015 Annual General Meeting turned out to be the most successful to date.

Held on April 14 and 15, the meeting included a variety of speakers, a communications training workshop and the presentation of Farm & Food Care's "Champion" award. Here are some of the highlights:

Farmers telling their stories

The meeting kicked off with an abbreviated presentation of The Real Dirt on Farming Speakers' Bureau training series - a now nationwide program designed to help farmers reach non-farming audiences and tell their own stories. With support from previous program participants Aaron Stevanus and Dave McEachren, facilitator Bernard Tobin took 90 attendees through the The Real Dirt on Farming, and how it can help agricultural stakeholders communicate with consumers.

Brent Royce receives "Champion" award
Brent Royce of Listowel has been named the 2015 recipient of
the Farm & Food Care Champion Award. The award - which is

POSTPONED: Breakfast on the Farm

Farm & Food Care Ontario is disappointed to announce that in light of the recent cases of Avian Influenza (A.I.) in Oxford County, the June 6, 2015 Breakfast on the Farm event has been postponed indefinitely.

A.I. poses a significant risk to Ontario's poultry farmers like the Veldman family of Embro who had agreed to host the 2015 event. This decision is based upon advice of industry partners and discussion with the host farm family.

While Breakfast on the Farm offers a significant outreach opportunity for Ontario's farm community, the organizing committee has determined the risk to the industry outweighs any potential benefits.

Since 2013, 6,000 people have visited three Breakfast on the Farm events in Ontario. Almost 900 tickets had already been reserved for the Oxford County event. Attendees will be notified when the event is rescheduled.
