FARM & FOOD CARE ENGAGES CBC RADIO
CBC Radio's Ontario Today recently interviewed Dr. Mike Petrik of Farm & Food Care in a discussion on whether consumers were willing to pay more for "humanely raised meat."

Petrik, along with director Bill Wymenga of Ontario Pork, responded to a number of questions regarding animal welfare and consumer demands, as well as points raised by the executive director for the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies. Topics included the use of farrowing pens as well as gestation stalls, the expenses associated with converting barns to free-stall systems and housing for egg-laying hens.

IMPACT program unveiled

Farm & Food Care Ontario unveiled its new IMPACT (Innovative Management and Practical Animal Care Training) animal care training program in Cambridge last month. 80 industry leaders from across Ontario's livestock sectors attended the conference.

Designed to develop and deliver practical resources and training, the IMPACT program focuses on people who work with farm animals to provide them with improved skills and confidence when handling animals.

The IMPACT conference served as a platform to showcase the resources that have been created to date, as well as outline plans for moving into the next phase of delivering training. The conference also served as a call to action; participants were asked to help promote IMPACT and its resources, with some helping to deliver training in the future.

One of the first training events featured through the program is a series of on-farm animal handling workshops facilitated by Dr. Don Hogland, an adjunct professor of large animal behaviour and dairy stockmanship at North Carolina State and Virginia Tech universities. These training sessions on dairy farms across Ontario will look at using low-energy handling techniques and how they can improve outcomes for both people and cattle.
