Ag Ambassador Tip
of the Month - Staying informed

Keep an eye on the news for any stories related to agriculture or food.  You never know when a quick trip into town could lead to a conversation about current issues, and it is much easier to answer someone's questions if you know what they are talking about.  You can't rely on their interpretation of the situation to tell you the whole story, especially if they have one key piece of information they have missed or misunderstood.

      Industry News:
Specialty chicken breeding program introduced

Chicken Farmers of Ontario (CFO) has introduced a new Specialty Breeds Chicken Program to support the increasing Ontario ethnocultural consumer demand for alternative breeds of chicken processed with head and feet on.

To learn more about how you can become a part of this new program, you are invited to attend a CFO Specialty Breeds information session being held in the communities of: Guelph, St. Jacobs, Clinton, Vineland, Delhi,

October 4 in Newcastle

Breakfast on the Farm...or in the orchard

Breakfast on the Farm

Ontario's second Breakfast on the Farm event of 2014 will be held at Wilmot Orchards in Newcastle on October 4. The 83 acre farm and orchard is the home of Charles and Judi Stevens and their family.

Wilmot Orchards also grows nine varieties of pick your own blueberries, which are a main ingredient in many of the treats available through the on-site cafe.

While at the farm, attendees can tour the orchard, visit agricultural displays, and see a falconer display how his birds of prey keep nuisance birds from preying on the Stevens' blueberry crop.

The event will include a complimentary all-Ontario breakfast for the first 2,000 visitors, followed by a tour of the farm. Over 1400 tickets have already been reserved.

To learn more, visit the Farm & Food Care website. You can also take a virtual farm tour of Wilmot Orchards by visiting the link below:

The Real Dirt on Farming - Farm Speakers' Bureau
Real Dirt on FarmingIn conjunction with the publication of a new edition of The Real Dirt on Farming booklet this November, Farm & Food Care will also be launching a farmers' Speakers Bureau program this fall.

The speakers would also be given copies of the new Dirt on Farming booklet to leave with their audiences.

As a start, four workshops are being organized in the following areas of the province:
  • November 18 - Metcalfe fairgrounds, Ottawa
  • November 20 - Peterborough Lions Den, Peterborough
  • November 25 - Ridgetown Municipal Centre, Ridgetown
  • November 27 - Guelph Turfgrass Institute, Guelph

More courses will be offered in the winter months.

The day-long workshops will be free of charge although space will be limited to the first 20 participants in each. If you'd like to register or be put on a list for information about courses in your area, email info@farmfoodcare.org.

Golfers support Foundation

The Farm & Food Care Foundation has received some great donations through some industry golf tournaments this summer.

The annual Burnbrae Farms golf tournament held in August raised $500 from a Heads and Tails game played with golfers. Burnbrae Farms matched the funds for a total donation of $1,000 to the Foundation.

Foundation representatives were also on hand at the Poultry Industry Council's golf tournament in early September.  The Foundation and PIC split the proceeds from a Heads and Tails game and each organization received $325.

Special thanks to both Burnbrae Farms and to the Poultry Industry Council for partnering with the Foundation on these fundraising efforts.
