Ag Ambassador Tip
of the Month - when you're running a farm tour

1. Choose your audience. Farm tours are excellent learning opportunities for students, youth groups, reporters and government officials, but not all at the same time.

2. Promote a positive image. Be proud of who you are and what you do! Keep facilities clean and in good repair. Be conscious of what people may see or take pictures of.

3. Only speak on what you know. Offer to find answers or refer questions you're not sure about.

4. Make it relevant and understandable. Talk in terms that your visitors will understand and use examples that are relevant to their experiences.

5. Make it memorable. Remember that for many visitors, this may be their first (and only) opportunity to see a farm. What do you want them to remember?

Ontario Septic System Survey

Are you an Ontario septic system user? Complete the survey for a chance to win $500 towards system maintenance, effluent filter installation, upgrades, or repairs.

The survey was developed by Green Communities Canada, with funding from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs. Results will be used to inform development of a Rural Safe Water Program, which will help rural Ontario residents protect their property values, drinking water, and the environment.

For more information contact Clara Blakelock, Coordinator of Water Programs with Green Communities Canada (cblakelock@ greencommunitiescanada.org or 705-745-7459, extension 159) . The survey will be open until September 30, 2014.

The Real Dirt on Farming - Farm Speakers' Bureau
In conjunction with the publication of a new edition of The Real Dirt on Farming booklet, Farm & Food Care will also be launching a farmers' Speakers Bureau program this fall.

Presentation skills workshops will be given across the province to farmers and agri-food industry professionals interested in learning how to give effective presentations on farm topics. The theory is that these speakers would then be equipped to give customizable presentations to local service clubs, school groups and other audiences. The speakers would also be given copies of the new Dirt on Farming booklet to leave with their audiences.

As a start, four workshops are being organized in the following areas of the province:
  • November 18 - Ottawa area
  • November 20 - Peterborough area
  • November 25 - Chatham area
  • November 27 - Guelph area

More courses will be offered in the winter months.

The day-long workshops will be free of charge although space will be limited to the first 20 participants in each. If you'd like to register or be put on a list for information about courses in your area, email info@farmfoodcare.org.
