2,300 attend Breakfast on the Farm in Avonmore
Visitors were invited to have their photo taken with a cow which was a popular attraction.
Farm & Food Care's second Breakfast on the Farm event was held on Saturday, August 2 at Stanlee Farms in Avonmore. Stanlee Farms is a fifth generation dairy farm owned by Jim and Nancy Wert and their four sons. In 2014, the farm is celebrating its 150th anniversary of being in the Wert family.

A total of 2,300 visitors to the farm (including 150 volunteers) enjoyed an all-Ontario breakfast with more just coming to tour the farm and see numerous exhibits put up by farm organizations from across the province.

A special thanks goes to the event's presenting partners: Dairy Farmers of Ontario, Egg Farmers of Ontario, Dairy Farmers of Canada and L.H. Gray. Thanks also to the many exhibitors who took time away from a long weekend with their families to staff almost two dozen displays.

A complete photo album from the event has been posted to http://bit.ly/WhhpHm

A second Breakfast on the Farm event will be held on October 4 at Wilmot Orchards in Newcastle. More details on that Breakfast event will be available in the September newsletter.

Winners in national farm photo contest

The winning photo of Sheri Mangin of Manitoba

Winners have been announced in the Farm & Food Care Foundation's inaugural Farm Photo Contest.

The contest which ran from early May until the end of June gave photographers the chance to enter their farm photography in six categories.

The categories include: All About Animals, Canadian Farm Scenes, Crazy About Crops, Farm Faces, Farm Fun and Farm Innovation.

The contest generated 650 entries from across the country. Prizes in the amount of $400 (first), $200 (second), $100 (third) and $50 (honourable mention) will be awarded to the winners of each category. An additional $400 will also go to the overall contest winner - the entry of Sheri Mangin of Manitoba.

Many of the winning photos will be featured in the 2014 edition of The Real Dirt on Farming. This national publication answers common questions asked by the public about food and farming practices in Canada, and will be released in November of 2014. Photos may also be used in other Farm & Food Care initiatives.

Winning entries were chosen through a combination of a two week Facebook contest, where viewers voted on their favourite entries, and by a panel of three Canadian photographers who served as independent judges.

All winning entries and a complete list of winners can be viewed on the Farm & Food Care website.

The Real Dirt on Farming - Farm Speakers' Bureau
In conjunction with the publication of a new edition of The Real Dirt on Farming booklet, Farm & Food Care will also be launching a farmers' Speakers Bureau program this fall.

Presentation skills workshops will be given across the province to farmers and agri-food industry professionals interested in learning how to give effective presentations on farm topics. The theory is that these speakers would then be equipped to give customizable presentations to local service clubs, school groups and other audiences. The speakers would also be given copies of the new Dirt on Farming booklet to leave with their audiences.

As a start, four workshops are being organized in the following areas of the province:
  • November 18 - Ottawa area
  • November 20 - Peterborough area
  • November 25 - Chatham area
  • November 27 - Guelph area

More courses will be offered in the winter months.

The day-long workshops will be free of charge although space will be limited to the first 20 participants in each. If you'd like to register or be put on a list for information about courses in your area, email info@farmfoodcare.org.
