Ag Ambassador Tip
of the Month

Do not just rely on science when you are answering questions.  Show the people you are talking to how much you care about your livestock and the environment.

For example, "We treat our animals well because we care about them and do not want to see them sick or hurting."

Remind people you do something because it is right, and although economics and science do play a role, they are not the deciding factor in a decision.

First Local Food Week kicks off June 2-8 in Ontario
Local Food Week

Ontario will be celebrating its first ever Local Food Week from June 2-8, 2014. It's a great opportunity to celebrate the passion we all have for local food and will help to advance a conversation with consumers about how to seek out and buy local food throughout the entire year.

Ontario Agriculture Week, scheduled for the week of October 6-12, 2014 will be another opportunity to boost our collective efforts in support of farmers and the food they produce in Ontario. These two weeks are the perfect bookends to a season of warm weather and delicious local food.

To spread the word about Local Food Week, Farm & Food Care has coordinated the launch of a new website and a social media campaign. The website can be found at loveontfood.ca and is the main hub for all activities related to Local Food Week. For Twitter enthusiasts, follow the hashtag #loveONTfood and join a Twitter party on June 3 at 8pm, hosted by Farm & Food Care, to join in the conversation and have the chance to win a variety of food prizes.

Here are some quick tips on how YOU can take part in the Local Food Week celebration, both during the week and all year long:

  • Signs and posters: Do you or anyone you know have a road sign or counter space for signage? Proudly tell those driving by or visiting to "Celebrate local food!" and include the website or the hashtag in the message.
  • Social media: Include #loveONTfood in all your social media sharing. Join and help promote a local food Twitter party taking place on June 3rd, at 8:00 pm, hosted by @FarmFoodCare.
  • Websites and advertisements: If you have a website, blog, or any advertising options, visit www.loveontfood.ca to download and include a local food celebration button so your readers can easily find everything they need to know about local food.
  • Your ideas here... Think creative and fun. Share what you did or plan to do to celebrate local food by email at info@farmfoodcare.org or by tweeting using the #loveONTfood hashtag.

The governments of Canada and Ontario are investing up to $2 million under the Growing Forward 2 program for a new animal welfare initiative in Ontario.

The IMPACT program, managed by Farm & Food Care, will develop and provide training, communications and related resources with a goal to help advance responsible farm animal care across Ontario. This two year program (2014-2016) will provide Ontario farmers and others who work with farm animals with practical training and plans for implementing new practices in their operations.

Helping those who work with farm animals keep up to date with the latest research, standards and practices related to farm animal care will provide a valuable base for implementing changes that can benefit both animals and people.

The program team will work with animal welfare-related leaders identified by sector and area of expertise for program development and content. Farm & Food Care's Farm Animal Care Advisory Council will serve as the oversight group for this program.

The multi species resources developed through this program will be based on existing industry resources such as the Codes of Practice for the Care and Handling of Farm Animals, Quality Assurance Programs, training and education programs, as well as current academic research and best practices used in other jurisdictions.

Farmers, processors, organizations and collaborations will also be able to receive support under Growing Forward 2 for activities that enhance animal welfare, including training, skills development, and project planning and implementation.

Joining the team will be Dr. Mike Petrik as the program's lead and Dr. Laura Beveridge as the program's coordinator.

Said Petrik, "Making an impact on the lives of animals on the farm takes knowledge, resources and experience, and this program will provide all of these in a way that will let farmers and their animals benefit on a day to day basis. All farmers and others who work with livestock have the desire to care for their animals in the best way possible, and this program will give them a valuable tool to continue to improve in this priority."
