"Gifts from this year's gala will ensure that we can continue to

provide the most accurate information about farming and food production today." said Bruce Christie, Foundation chairman.

He added, "The Foundation is looking forward to enhancing and expanding its programs and, in 2014, producing the Real Dirt on Farming III. Thank you to everyone who supported the cause by attending or sponsoring the event."

 Managing Access to Information requests

Several farmers and processing plants across Canada have received Access to Information (ATIP) requests from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency relating to specific information on transport, animal and inspection data recently. This is a new tactic activists are trying out to gain access to personal information about farmers and agri-businesses, including names and 911 addresses, with the plans to expand depending on the success of their efforts.

Farm & Food Care coordinates the Ag & Food Exchange, a specialized team with expertise related to special interest group pressures on food and farming. If you or any of your members or customers are contacted for Access to Information requests, please contact the AFX through Farm & Food Care to report it and for advice.

 Breakfast on the Farm wins

two Best of CAMA awards

The inaugural Breakfast on the Farm event, organized by Farm & Food Care Ontario last June, recently won the Canadian Agri Marketing Association's (CAMA) Best of Show award in the Public Relations category.

The event also received an award for top Community Relations program.

The Best of CAMA awards are held annually and recognize top agri marketing efforts from across Canada.  The awards ceremony was held in Quebec City in November.

Seeking hosts for 2014 Breakfast on the Farm events

Farm & Food Care is seeking applications for at least one and possibly two host farms for Breakfast on the Farm initiatives in 2014.  The opportunity is open to any type of farm and in all parts of Ontario.

The inaugural Ontario event was held in June of 2013 in Waterloo Region, attracting more than 2,000 visitors to a dairy farm for an all-Ontario breakfast and farm tour.

Farms must consider all aspects of hosting such an event. They must be comfortable with allowing visitors access to all areas of their farm that are safe and accessible; have parking for several hundred vehicles and either have a building large enough to seat about 300 for breakfast or a location suitable for a tent. Other details about hosting and a host application are available online .

Questions can be directed to Sue McLarty at the Farm & Food Care office at sue@farmfoodcare.org or by calling (519) 837-1326.

Ontario Pesticide Survey underway

All Ontario field crop, vegetable, fruit and specialty crop farmers are asked to fill out a confidential, anonymous on-line survey of pesticide use in 2013 for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the Ministry of Rural Affairs. The survey is being conducted by Farm & Food Care and only takes a few minutes to complete. Please gather your field spray records and follow this link to complete the survey: www.ontariopesticidesurvey.ca.

Government, commodity boards and researchers use the information to improve minor use pesticide registration lists, work toward safer use of pesticides and to understand trends in use and the types of pesticides used.

'Tis the season for charitable giving

Thinking of year end charitable giving and receiving maximum tax benefits? The donation deadline for a 2013 tax receipt is December 31, 2013 and Canada Revenue Agency regulations stipulate that donations postmarked by Canada Post after December 31, 2013 will receive a 2014 charitable tax receipt.

Donate now to ensure you don't miss the year end giving deadline and support the public trust, awareness and confidence in food and farming.

To make donating easy, the Farm & Food Care Foundation offers three options: by mail, in person at the office or online at www.farmcarefoundation.ca
