Farm animal care and emergency awareness van

You might see some of our staff cruising around in the brand new Farm Animal Care & Emergency Awareness van this fall at various events and meetings. Thanks to Ontario Pork and the Canadian Swine Health Board for partnering and providing funding for this vehicle to become a reality.

FFC staff will be bringing the van out to events and meetings as part of our commitment to increasing awareness and information on farm animal care issues. The van is also in the process of being fully equipped to respond to emergencies involving farm animals i.e. truck rollovers.

Stop by to check out the vehicle at Canada's Outdoor Farm Show this fall.

Two egg tours added to virtual farm tour site

  Virtual Farm Tours

Two new egg farm tours have been added to the popular www.virtualfarmtours.ca website, bringing the total number of Canadian farms available for viewing to 25, including five different egg farm tours.

Filming of the two additional tours - an aviary egg farm and an enriched colony egg farm - was sponsored by Burnbrae Farms Ltd. Burnbrae Farms also funded costs associated with upgrading the entire virtual farm tour website to make it compatible for viewers accessing it through their mobile tablets and smart phones.

The new tours, available in both English and French, compliment already-existing tours of conventional, free run and free range egg farms. Each focuses on topics that are key to egg farmers - caring for birds, housing options, what the birds eat and drink, reasons behind biosecurity programs, on-farm food safety initiatives and much more.

Traffic to the site has increased every year since it was first launched in 2006. It now receives about 150,000 visitors per year. Other tours show beef and dairy cattle, sheep, deer, elk, pig, veal calves, goat farms, ratites, and chickens. More are planned in the future.

Survey to study farm water use

Farmers rely on water each day for the optimal growth of crops and providing livestock with water, but when do farmers really think about water use? The last two years were dry in Ontario, and though precipitation levels are near normal already this year, it is an opportunity to discuss water management further. How does your farm deal with excess water or a drought? Where do you normally source your water?  These are important questions that farmers must consider for their operation.

Farm & Food Care, as part of the Water Resource Adaptation and Management Initiative (WRAMI), will partner with Strategic Research Associates (Guelph) to conduct a survey of farmers this fall to ask some of these questions about their water source and how they store, use and manage water on the farm.

This WRAMI-funded study will seek to find out how farmers are managing their water use decisions and what information or tools they might need to make the best decisions possible for their operation.

AgMazing Race

Farm & Food Care coordinated this year's annual AgMazing Race event at the University of Guelph on July 25.

Similar to the television show, The Amazing Race, participants receive cryptic clues and at each station must complete tasks until they receive a final clue and proceed to the finish line.

There were 16 participants as part of 4-H's Career Mania Conference. During the week, events were planned to inspire participants to explore many career options available in agriculture.

Students raced to be first and raved about the event to their supervisor later in the day. Thank you to volunteers Beth Storey, Jarrett Chung-Smith and Sue Shafer for their assistance in making the AgMazing Race a success.
