Cultivating a Sustainable Future Forums
When it comes to food and farming, the battle for hearts and minds, wallets and headlines are often based on farm animal welfare or environmental issues and arguments. Here's your chance to hear some innovative and challenging speakers on these often divisive topics. Day One (February 12): Focus on Farm Animal Welfare

Proceeds from Embro Truck and Tractor pull
Oxford Junior Farmers donate $5,000
January 14, 2013 (Embro) - Members of the Oxford Junior Farmers' Association have donated $5,000 to Farm & Food Care Ontario's Agricultural Ambassador program.
The Oxford County Junior Farmers' Association is an affiliate of the Junior Farmers' Association of Ontario. Each year, the Oxford club helps to host the Embro Truck and Tractor pull in August. Oxford members operate information booths, assist with activities on the track and host a food booth and beverage tent.

Each year, the club donates the proceeds of the event to local charities and causes. In 2012, money was donated to the Embro Community Centre to complete its fundraising campaign. In 2013, the funds will be divided between Farm & Food Care and the Woodstock, Ingersoll and Tillsonburg hospitals.
Farm & Food Care's Agricultural Ambassador training program provides workshops for young advocates interested in learning how to be better spokespeople for their industry. In 2012, the program provided training for 435 ambassadors from the Kemptville, Ridgetown and Guelph campuses of the University of Guelph, fall fair ambassadors and more.
Virginia Dibble, spokesperson from the Oxford Junior Farmers, said, "As an organization comprised of rural youth, we're excited to support this program. Some of our members have already taken the young ambassador training and have said that their newfound skills give them more confidence in talking about their family farms with urban audiences."
Heather Hargrave manages Farm & Food Care's Agricultural Ambassador program. She said that Oxford funds will be put into planned expansions for the program in 2013. Work is already underway to create a social media portal for Ontario advocates. A new website will be launched later in 2013 that will feature blogs from young Ontario advocates as well as an online forum for advocates to talk with each other about the work they're doing, questions they've been asked and more.
This donation from the Oxford Junior Farmers is over and above a generous commitment made by the Junior Farmers' Association of Ontario to support the Farm & Food Care Foundation as its provincial charity for 2012. The decision was made by delegates to JFAO's March Conference in 2012. |

Save the Date: April 2-3, 2013
Farm & Food Care's Annual Meeting
Farm & Food Care's Annual Meeting will be held April 2-3, 2013 at the new Hanlon Convention Centre in Guelph. The two day program will feature three different sessions - all open to members and industry supporters. More details on all will be available later in February.
April 2, 2013 (Afternoon) Communications and Discussion - Establishing a social contract with Canadians
The Farm & Food Care Foundation is in the process of hiring an agency to develop a new framework for proactive dialogue with Canadians that builds trust and confidence in food and farming. This work is the positive outcome from the North American Forum for Sustainable Animal Agriculture hosted in Mississauga last September, and initiated in discussions at the Feeding a Hungry World Summit in Ottawa in October 2011.
The goal of the five-year project will be to create a social contract between Canadians and the people who grow, process and market their food with consideration for the five principles of sustainable food and farming: human health, food safety, economics/food affordability, environment and animal welfare.
The draft framework will be presented at an afternoon session on April 2 with facilitated discussion for your input on the strategy and the approach. This session will be free of charge for Farm & Food Care members.
April 2, 2013 (Evening) - Social Media Training Session
Twitter? Facebook? Pinterest? What are they all about anyway and how can they help us tell the story of food and farming.
This social media workshop will be free to Farm & Food Care members and will be facilitated by Andrew Campbell, former radio journalist, dairy farmer and advocate for agriculture.
Campbell is passionate about ensuring farmers know how they can access information like never before, and that consumers know what farmers are doing for them every day. Social media and smartphones are big parts of that equation, and Andrew has spoken to groups across Canada about how they are changing the way farms operate.
The workshop will look at best practices, do's and don'ts and how easy it is to talk about what farmers are doing day in and day out. It isn't hard, it just takes a few minutes a day to help improve the image of YOUR business and industry.
This workshop is free to Farm & Food Care members, but space is limited to the first 100 that register. Registrations are open. Send an email to info@farmfoodcare.org
April 3, 2013 - Farm & Food Care Annual Meeting and Speaker Program
Keynote: Is telling your story enough in this crazy world of YouTube and negative headlines?
Dr. Wes Jamison, Associate Professor of Public Relations at Palm Beach Atlantic University is a dynamic and thought provoking speaker who challenges conventional thinking about how agriculture should communicate with the public with some innovative ideas. Dr. Jamieson has studied interest group activism and conflict, and has researched public relations related to activist communications and urban-rural conflict, Dr. Jamison's expertise combines public relations, political science, and political communication.
The meeting will also include:
- What do Canadians and farmers really think about food, farming, animal welfare and the environment? Ipsos Research Highlights
- Highlights of Farm & Food Care's activities from its first year of business.
- Presentation of the Farm & Food Care Champion award
- Elections by the membership for the 2013-2014 Board of Directors.

March 18 or March 27, 2013
Media training sessions planned
Back by popular demand, two more media training sessions have been planned for March 18 or March 27. The two courses offered last fall were both sold out.
The sessions will be interactive and give the participants the understanding of the media, the tools needed to prepare to face the media and an interview process that will give each person real life interview experience. The program is useful for board members and staff at commodity associations who speak regularly about issues related to their sectors or any primary producer who is asked to give farm tours or speak on behalf of agriculture at municipal council meetings or other events.
Each session will include a focus on:
- Media tips and techniques
- Writing letters to the editor and opinion pieces
- Key messages - what are you saying, who are you saying it to and why?
- Interview/public speaking techniques
- Dealing with difficult questions
- Two to three on-camera practice sessions with review and feedback.
The cost is $400 per attendee and space is limited to the first 10 participants who register. Book a spot by emailing info@farmfoodcare.org. |
