Lenten Reflections

Working in collaboration with our friends at Catholic Volunteer Network, we are pleased to present a Lenten Reflection Guide. These reflections are centered around the four pillars of faith-based service: spirituality, social justice, simple living and community. They are authored by many current CVN staff members and former volunteers, including Monica Konschnik, our own Finance & Administration Manager and former member of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. We pray that these reflections may support your spiritual journey this Lent and especially help us remember those who God is calling us to serve in our own communities. Click here to read these reflections.

In this time of Lent we turn our focus to six weeks of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The Church provides us with many beautiful teachings in this Lenten season and we encourage you to learn more about them through our Lenten Resource page. Complete with many different Lenten reflections, guides to the Sacrament of Penance, the Stations of the Cross and more, we hope that this provides you with a valuable resource for Lent! Be sure to check it out by clicking here and share it with your family, friends and colleagues.

"Practicing charity is the best way to evangelize."

-Pope Francis (via @Pontifex on Twitter)

Today marks the second anniversary of the election of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio to the Chair of Saint Peter. In this short time, Pope Francis has captured the attention and admiration of Catholics and non-Catholics alike as he shepherds the global Church. In his speech and personal witness,
he continues to guide the Church in the footsteps of Christ and the apostles.

On this anniversary we invite you to visit our Pope Francis Portal which contains links to his many published works and news coverage of his Apostolic Visits. We ask that you join with all of us here at the Catholic Apostolate Center in praying for our Holy Father, Pope Francis, the bishops and all those who hold and teach the Catholic faith.

A School of Charity
by Alyce Anderson
(Originally published March 5, 2015)

We are about two weeks into our Lenten sojourn, and I'm not sure about your experience so far, but I know that it has already been a challenge for me. And that's good! I wanted this Lent to more closely unite me to the Cross of Christ, not just for these forty days, but beyond this season, and God is answering this prayer in ways that I could never expect. In fact, he is delivering me from my own crosses so that I may know joy through this suffering.

So far, I've been able to take away two important lessons from my Lenten journey:
  1. "Lent is a school of charity. Life is a school of charity."
  2. Where my roots are planted determine how I will be conscious of God bearing me through this school of charity.
Year of Consecrated Life Portal

Last month the global Church celebrated the World Day for Consecrated Life, which carried even greater meaning within this Year of Consecrated Life, announced by Pope Francis. As a ministry of the Society of the Catholic Apostolate (Pallottines) and the priests and brothers of the Immaculate Conception Province here in the United States, this Year of Consecrated Life carries great significance in our work here at the Catholic Apostolate Center. We invite you to visit our resource page which compiles resources from many different Church ministries, publications and leaders. Our prayer is that these resources may assist us in coming to a fuller appreciation and understanding of the part that consecrated religious play in the life of our global Church community.
