Our Lady of Lourdes
This feast day dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes commemorates the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the young girl, Bernadette Soubirous, in Lourdes, France in 1858. Lourdes has become a place of healing and pilgrimage, but even more of faith. Church authorities have recognized over 60 miraculous cures, although there have probably been more. To people of faith this is not surprising. It is a continuation of Jesus' healing miracles - now performed at the intercession of His mother.
Today the Church recognizes this feast as the World Day of the Sick, a way to remember and pray for all those suffering from illness and those who care for them. Click here to read Pope Francis' message, marking the World Day of the Sick 2014.
