Catholic Social Teaching Resources
As the holiday season quickly approaches, no doubt we all will be involved in some way with campaigns for charitable causes ranging from our parish food drive to placing a donation in the bucket of the Salvation Army bell ringer at the local store. These upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons always provide an opportunity for us to remember all of those marginalized in our society, especially the poor. This time of year can also be used as an impetus for each of us to take a closer look at the Church's social teaching and a means of discovering why we are called to serve the most vulnerable among us, both now and all year round.
We encourage you to check out our latest compilation of Church resources on Catholic Social Teaching at our website by clicking the link below. Here you'll find resources from a wide array of reputable sources covering many topics that might be of interest to you!

Catholic Volunteer Network - Celebrating 50 Years of Service!
This year one of our affiliates, Catholic Volunteer Network, celebrates 50 years of ministry! Since its inception in 1963, Catholic Volunteer Network has provided thousands of people with volunteer training and resources, as well as networking opportunities. We're proud to partner with this excellent ministry in assisting them in their efforts to advocate for faith-based volunteerism.
This past weekend, our Director, Fr. Frank Donio S.A.C., as well as our Administration & Finance Manager and our CVN affiliate coordinator, Monica Thom Konschnik, were pleased to represent the Catholic Apostolate Center at the organization's annual conference in Washington, D.C. Through our affiliation with Catholic Volunteer Network, we've been proud to sponsor publications such as Shared Visions and Staying Connected as well as resources such as the CVN Job Bank and What's Next Notebook. Click the respective newsletter to check out archived editions of both Shared Visions and Staying Connected. The Catholic Apostolate Center is pleased to continue this collaboration that began more than 28 years ago, when the St. Vincent Pallotti Center was formed by the Immaculate Conception Province of Pallottine Priests and Brothers (of which the Catholic Apostolate Center is also a ministry).
In recognition of their 50th Anniversary the Catholic Volunteer Network commissioned a study to discover the effects volunteering had on its past participants. The recently published results of that study are highlighted in the Catholic News Service video below - check it out!

Fully Possess Oneself to Fully Give Oneself
By Jen Coe, a volunteer with the Catholic Volunteer Network (Published November 5, 2013)
I try to make it to weekday mass before work. One day recently, father spoke of self-possession. "We must fully possess ourselves to fully give ourselves." For me, these words could not ring more true.
My service year thus far has been one of immense growth, complete with intense growing pains (I went from 5' 4" to nearly 5' 9" in middle school and I remember complaining to my father how much my knees and legs were hurting). Until mass that day, I didn't connect that I've been learning, trial-by-fire, the important relationship between self-possession and self-gift. Read more
