Where has the time gone? It's hard to believe that Labor Day weekend is already upon us and, with it, the unofficial end of the summer holiday season. Now it's time to head back to school, pull out the sweaters and get excited for the return of the pumpkin spice latte (or at least for some of us)!

This coming fall also brings the end of the Year of Faith on November 24th, as the Church marks the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King. Since the beginning of this Year of Faith in October 2012, the staff here at the Catholic Apostolate Center has striven to provide you with the best resources to help revive and challenge you in your personal faith journey.

One of those tools we've been using is "10 Ways to Live Well the Year of Faith." Developed by Catholic Apostolate Center Director, Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C. and shared in many of our Year of Faith webinar series', over the past few months we've highlighted each of these 10 Ways in successive newsletters. This newsletter features our ninth recommended tool and our next newsletter in September will conclude this mini-series.

We encourage you to read this newsletter's recommended way to "Live Well the Year of Faith" and check out our newsletter archive for past editions. In the coming months, we'll be debuting more resources as the Year of Faith comes to close, and we hope that what we've shared so far has reinvigorated your faith life as it has ours, and formed you as a stronger apostle for Christ!

As always, feedback on any of our resources (including this newsletter) is always welcomed and appreciated!

In God, the Infinite Love,

The Catholic Apostolate Center Team

In recognition of this Year of Faith, in each successive newsletter we'll be sharing with you a few additional suggestions and ways in which you can "Live Well the Year of Faith"!

9. Engage in Charitable Activity
for Christ
Prior to his election to the papacy, Cardinal Bergoglio was known as a shepherd who cared for his flock but especially the poor and downtrodden. Soon after his election, stories began to appear about his work in the slums of Buenos Aires and with imprisoned youth. His choice to celebrate Holy Thursday mass in one of Rome's prisions for young adults indicated that his dedication to the outcast had not diminished.

In this Year of Faith, each of us can look to the example of Pope Francis for a renewed sense of vigor in our own outreach and charitable activity. In some secular circles unfortunately the word charity has begun to lose its meaning as a selfless act rooted in love but has come to imply a thoughtless handout. Pope Francis reminds us that any charitable act must first and foremost be rooted in a selfless gift, just as Christ gave his life for each of us. In the homily of his installation mass, Pope Francis says,

"Let us never forget that authentic power is service, and that the Pope too, when exercising power, must enter ever more fully into that service which has its radiant culmination on the Cross...To protect Jesus with Mary, to protect the whole of creation, to protect each person, especially the poorest, to protect ourselves: this is a service that the Bishop of Rome is called to carry out, yet one to which all of us are called, so that the star of hope will shine brightly."

We pray that our charitable works may be rooted in a selfless love that seeks to imitate Christ's love for us, and that His love may shine forth and be seen by those we are called to serve.

Not sure where or how to get started in serving those in need around you? Check out the resources below for some suggestions!

A Blessed Labor Day!
Each year as we mark this unofficial end to the summer season, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops releases its annual Labor Day Statement. While we are very blessed to live in this country that stands as a hallmark of freedom and justice, the Bishops remind us that there are those among us that are still working for the dignity they deserve as fellow American workers.

Let us keep these intentions in our prayers and give thanks for those who labor and provide for each of us! Click here to read the USCCB's 2013 Labor Day Statement.
