Greetings!

As we embark on this second week of Advent, that no doubt includes the hustle and bustle of work, end of semester exams or the usual rush of checking gifts off of your Christmas to-do list, we hope that you might find a few minutes of quiet to read this newsletter.

Advent gives us a great opportunity to slow down and find some time for personal reflection. It also gives us much to reflect upon! Over the weekend the Church celebrated the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, a chance to reflect upon the beauty of Mary's courageous witness in a life without sin. In a blog post marking this Holy Day, Cardinal Wuerl the Archbishop of Washington D.C. notes that as we come to know the Virgin Mary, "...we might see in this Year of Faith that the entire life of Mary is not only a model, but the model for each of us, both in our earthly lives and in the eternal life which her Son offers to us."

Despite the busy nature of this time of year, perhaps we all could use just a few minutes of quiet each day, especially during this season of Advent. Pope Benedict XVI, reminded us in his address on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception that "God's voice is not recognized in the noise and agitation". We pray, that through our ministry we may be able to provide you with resources for reflection and help enhance your Advent season as we all discover the apostle God is calling each of us to be.

May the charity of Christ urge you on!

"What's the deal with Catholics and the Virgin Mary?"
It's a common question many Catholics may hear or even ask themselves from time to time. During this season of Advent that also sees the celebration of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, the editors at Busted Halo have put together this cool 2 minute video that explains all about Mary!

"The Church's Deepest Nature"
This Advent and approaching Christmas season are often times that see an increase in our charitable giving, particularly to our Catholic Charities and non-profits that serve the poorest among us. Recently Pope Benedict XVI released a papal letter on the Church's charitable efforts titled "The Church's Deepest Nature: On the Service of Charity" in which he re-establishes and outlines the role which the Church plays through its charitable work. The Holy Father explains,

In carrying out their charitable activity, therefore, the various Catholic organizations should not limit themselves merely to collecting and distributing funds, but should show special concern for individuals in need and exercise a valuable educational function within the Christian community, helping people to appreciate the importance of sharing, respect and love in the spirit of the
Gospel of Christ.

In a recent Catholic New Service video, Cardinal Maradiaga, the President of Caritas Internationalis explains why this view is so important and why it is our faith that must motivate us.
Perhaps it's worth asking yourself "What motivates me?" as we give more of ourselves in charity during this time of year.

The Vatican recently announced the launch of a papal Twitter account, @Pontifex, which Pope Benedict XVI will use to communicate brief messages of 140 characters or less to the faithful. Beginning this Wednesday, December 12, he will be sending his first Tweet and answering questions via Twitter at #askPontifex. Check out the Vatican news story here for more information!
