Message from Father Dave

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It is with great joy that I inform you that The Rev. Daniel Shoemake will be joining the staff of Christ Episcopal Church, Valdosta as Associate Rector, officially beginning July 1, 2015.  Daniel just graduated with a Master of Divinity from Emory University, Anglican Studies track.  He is an ordained deacon and will be ordained a priest next week in the Diocese of Minnesota.  While assisting me with preaching, teaching, and pastoral care, his primary focus will be developing our ministry with college students (particularly at VSU), youth, and young adults/families-as part of joining all of us at Christ Church in our ministry of preaching the Gospel, loving one another, and following the Holy Spirit.  Although he does not officially begin serving here until July 1, Daniel will be here this Sunday, June 14, serving as a deacon.  I encourage you to worship with us and welcome him during coffee hour following the 10:00 service.  Take care and I hope to see you Sunday!

Yours in Christ,

Dave

VBS 2015 - SUCCESS!

As we gather on Monday morning for the first day of Vacation Bible School, there is always a sense of anticipation, excitement, and, most of all, hope. We hope everyone has fun, that the stations run smoothly, that everyone gets along, and of course, that the Good News flows freely into young minds and hearts. And each year, we are reminded of why we love this church and these people so much, because those hopes were fulfilled this week, thanks to the incredible group of volunteers that made it all possible.

Phyllis Hiers and Mimi Allen (with extra help this year from Helen Tucker) always do an incredible job of showing the children the wonders of God's creation through fascinating science experiments. Karen Bell helped the children make physical manifestations of the scriptures each day with beautiful crafts such as prayer pots, sun catchers and sand art crosses. Grace Diamond and Kate Hanson had the challenging, but fun, job of teaching the children to make a joyful noise (and dance) to the Lord, and then leading the kids in their performance for the parents at the closing service on Thursday. Emily Johnson and Loyce Turner (with Thursday help from Jim Chamberlain) got to play with the kids in Games. The Snack crew - Steph Johnson, Sallie Honeycutt, Leigh Long, Susan Chamberlain, and Cheryl Hatcher - made yummy snacks to help the kids digest their lessons (feel free to groan at that pun) and keep them energized for the after-snack session.

Shepherding the kids through the stations was a fantastic group of leaders and helpers: Millie Johnson, Keri Wilkin, Julie Daughtrey, Shayla Bajalia, Julia Ariail, Rena Nelson, Hadley Kirkland, Cecilia Carroll, Caroline Prine, Brooklyn Prine, Kate Tunison, John David Greneker, Savannah Allen, and Cassidy Honeycutt. Running varied errands and doing odd jobs for Stefani Carroll were Hayden Coggins and John Nelson.

Our resident decorating diva, Rena Nelson, created the vision for a space of movement, color and fun. As usual, Julius Ariail did an incredible job of taking and posting pictures, tirelessly making the rounds each day to capture the magic and wonder that is VBS at Christ Church!

Dominican Republic Mission Trip
And we're off! - June 15 - June 22, 2015
Fr. Dave will commission several members of our 2015 mission team during the 10 a.m. service on Sunday, June 14. After that service, we drive to Orlando to meet the other members of our team and to spend the night in preparation for our flight to Santo Domingo on Monday, June 15. We return to Orlando late on the evening of June 22. Initial photos and daily reports from our trip will initially be available on Christ Church's Facebook page. Later, a complete report and comprehensive photo album will be posted on the church's website.

There are 20 members of this year's team from the Dioceses of Atlanta, Central Florida, Dominican Republic, Georgia, and North Carolina. We request your prayers as we work on several projects in the village of El Pedregal in the central highlands of the Dominican Republic. A guide for prayers, keyed to our daily schedule, is here

The sauna that was donated to benefit our mission team fund did not sell the first time it was listed on eBay, so we have lowered the initial bid level to $1,500 and have re-listed it. If you would like to check out this eBay item, go to this link.

EYC Haven Project

Our Junior and Middle School EYC groups are collecting hotel/sample sized toiletries which they will bag and send to The Haven for their clients. There will be a collection bin in the Parish Hall. Thank you so much for helping our youth do God's work in our community!

Friends, Family, and the Fourth at Honey Creek
Open to everyone in the Diocese of Georgia
If you enjoyed the recent parish weekend at Honey Creek and would like to do something like that again soon, or if you were not able to attend the weekend, you might want to check out another similar opportunity sponsored by the Diocese of Georgia that is coming up July 1-5, 2015. Honey Creek is open during this time for anyone in the Diocese to come and enjoy time with friends and family.

This week falls in between camp sessions, and the schedule is yours to design! Enjoy meals in the dining hall, swim in the pool, swing on the tire swings, ride bicycles, go kayaking, visit Jekyll and St. Simons Islands, go to Summer Waves, and spend some happy time time with family and friends. There will be a parade before lunch on July 4th, so bring your flags to march in the parade or wave and cheer from the sidelines. Come for all of those days, or just one or two, or make it a day trip and enjoy lunch at the Creek!

Contact Carolyn at Honey Creek (912-265-9218) to make reservations for lodging and meals in the dining hall.
