Excited for 2013
Greetings!
February certainly went out with a bang! Winter weather forced many of us to rearrange schedules, and put some of our lives on hold for a few days. Fortunately, we're all safe and able to stay warm during this blustery time. As we huddle inside, I hope you'll take time to remember those in the Ozarks that are less fortunate.
FLiP is certainly doing our part to make the lives of women and children in need in the Ozarks warmer. There are many women who have found comfort in new coats this winter thanks to the Suit Yourself Boutique. Many children will enjoy a warm bowl of soup provided by the Weekend Backpack program.
On behalf of those who will find warmth this winter thanks to FLiP programs, thank you.

Sincerely,

Megan Blevins                                              Cindy Howell

February Membership Meeting

We were pleased to see a few new faces at Febraury's FLiP membership meeting!
In case you missed it, here's what we talked about...

I. Program Presentation
At the February meeting we were blessed to hear more from Rare Breed. Rare Breed works to keep Springfield kids off of the streets. They have served homeless and disconnected youth in Springfield for over a decade, and they are serving more kids than ever before. Loni Brewer, the program director at Rare Breed spoke about the troubles these youth are facing and how the program helps to not only provide shelter for these kids, but also works to improve their confidence, and overall quality of life now, and in the future. Click here to learn more about the Rare Breed program.

IV. Special Events Committee

If you are interested in getting more involved with FLiP, we're looking for more helping hands on the Special Events Committee. Due to weather, we haven't had our first meeting yet, so you haven't missed out! We have some really exciting changes coming to our signature event in the summer, and we're looking at adding another small event to support FLiP and women and children in the Ozarks.

We're always looking for sponsors and silent auction items for our signature event, so if you don't think you have time to commit to the committee, then we'll always welcome those forms of outside support.

IV. Suit Yourself Boutique Update
The Winter Sale was a great success! We raised $1,350 for the boutique, and we had many happy local businesswomen who were excited to have the opportunity to shop and support the boutique.

On Wednesday, February 17th US Bank held an event for female bank employees that were in need of business attire. It was an all day affair put on by Laurie Adams, and by all accounts was a tremendous success. Many of their employees were able to find attire, and fashion advice to advance their careers at the bank.

We mentioned that we're looking at hosting an open house for the June First Friday Art Walk downtown at the Boutique. We're hoping to feature local artists and promote our signature event. We'll have more information later.

Weekend Backpack Program

Tell me a story...
The story of hunger is all too real for more than 50,000 children in the Ozarks that live in poverty. Ozarks Food Harvest is fighting to feed children who often go home to an empty dinner plate. Many of these children rely on school meals alone for their daily nutrition.
In 2003, the Food Bank initiated the Weekend Backpack Program to confront this critical issue. This anonymous program provides the most at-risk children with backpacks filled with healthy, easy open foods to eat over the weekends.
The Weekend Backpack Program is the Food Harvest's fastest growing program. Free and reduced meal rates are on the rise, revealing the increasing need for services for children. The children who participate in this program come from different walks of life, yet they share one similar tale; the story of hunger.

"Sometime we run out of food at home. It makes me sad. I don't tell my mom and dad. I just eat as much I can at school." - Clark age 10

"More than once my students have come up to me before a holiday or long break/ weekend worried about not getting a bag. They become dependent on the backpack food for the weekend and would start looking for it every Friday afternoon. It tells me there's a need at home when they need the bag so bad." -anonymous
