The Companion

Weekly E-Bulletin of
Rockhurst University's Campus Ministry
May 10, 2015
From the Director's Desk . . .

Dear friends,

It seems like it was just yesterday that we were welcoming the class of 2019.   I've heard so many say how fast this year has flown by! And now we're preparing to celebrate the graduation of the Class of 2015! Commencement is always bittersweet for us in Campus Ministry. Those students who we met four years ago and shared many of life's joys and sorrows with are now moving on to a new chapter in their lives. Although we are so happy and proud of how you've grown and what you've accomplished while at the Rock, we will miss having you in our everyday lives. Just know you'll remain in our hearts and in our prayers!

For those of you who will be returning in the fall, we hope you get a lot of much-deserved rest this summer and come back to campus ready to ROCK!

In reflecting on this year, I continue to be amazed at how committed you are to finding your place in this world and how to make this world a better place for all. I applaud you for taking the time and space in your busy lives to explore and strengthen your spiritual life.

Walking with you on your faith journey only helps us grow in ours through our challenging conversations with you, our dreaming with you about your future, and sharing the realities of the present with you.

This May marks a change for me as well.   I am retiring after seventeen years in Campus Ministry at Rockhurst.   Although I will miss the daily interactions with amazing students and miss working side-by-side with the best Campus Ministry team on the planet, I am looking forward to this next chapter of my life----more time for music, grandkids, gardening--- (you get the picture!) Luckily, this transition is made so much easier in that I'm turning over the reins to Cindy Schmersal who has been on the CM team for eight years. She is extremely capable and has deeply touched so many of our student's lives. Along with Bill Kriege--- "Campus Minister Extradionnaire"---- I am confident that the liturgies and programs will continue to rise to even greater heights.

May God hold you in the palm of His hand and shower you each day with His blessings.

I am forever grateful that you have been a part of my life and you will remain in my daily prayers.

Maureen

AMDG

Farewell, Maureen!

In 1998, Maureen Henderson arrived on the Rockhurst scene to serve in her capacity as Director of Campus Ministry. Over the past seventeen years, her playful spirit, zest for life, listening ear, and unparalleled skill at the piano and organ have gifted us on countless occasions.  Her way of proceeding has shown us that "the most satisfying thing in life is to have been able to give a large part of one's self to others." (Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, SJ)

We wish to extend our deepest thanks and strongest blessings to Maureen as she explores this next chapter of her life. Maureen, rest assured of our prayers, best wishes, admiration, and expectation that you will visit us here at Troost and 53rd!

From the community of students, staff and faculty at Loyola Baltimore:

In light of recent events in Baltimore, a few students felt it necessary that Loyola's student body respond with positive affirmations for justice reform.  We created a video that we hope will send the message that Loyola cares about it's greater Baltimore community.  We as a campus care deeply about the injustices facing many of our peers and friends and therefore we created a video based on our dream for change.

Year of Consecrated Life

November 30, 2014 - February 2, 2016 is dedicated as the Year for Consecrated Life.  To mark this year and to invite each of us to prayerfully and intentionally consider our own vocation, throughout this year, we include in "The Companion" a brief quote to be used for prayer and reflection.

Our religious charisms, our communities, our way of life and our very vocations are precious gifts that come with tremendous responsibilities. How will we share this responsibility and provide leadership and loving service with and for God's people into the future?

A Prayer

From many lives

I have gathered courage and strength -

I have learned humility

And gentleness

And forgiveness

And for all of these blessings

I am grateful . . .

And so you must understand

That your life is not your own -

It has become a part of mine -

And so it follows that my life does not belong to me -

It is yours.

Come Walk Among the Stars

----

Mighty God, Father of all, Compassionate God, Mother of all,

Bless every person I have met, every face I have seen, every voice I have heard,

Especially those most dear; bless every city, town, and street I have known,

Bless every sight I have seen, every sound I have heard, every object I have touched.

 In some mysterious way these have all fashioned my life;

All that I am, I have received. Great God, bless this world.
