Month of Remembrance

In union with all Jesuit institutions, we dedicate the month of November as a special time to remember in prayer those friends and family who have died.

If you would like a loved one to be remembered in prayer during this month, please write their names in the Mass of Remembrance Book displayed in Mabee Chapel.

This year is the Commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Jesuit Martyrs.  Throughout this week you will receive a daily reflection on these martyrs written by a brother Jesuit.

Tuesday, November 11th Blessing and Dedication of the new      Rose Garden planted in front of Sedgwick Hall in memory of martyrs will be held at 12:20PM.

Thursday, November 13th Mary Pimmel Freeman, Artist and RU alumna will present her artwork depicting the lives of the martyrs at a presentation at 9:00 PM in the Finucane Jesuit Center entitled "Falling in Love in El Salvador: the Jesuit Martyrs of the UCA"

These events are sponsored by the Offices of Campus Ministry and Mission and Ministry at Rockhurst University.

Thursday: Falling in Love in El Salvador: The Jesuit Martyrs of the UCA

Mary Pimmel-Freeman painted the portraits of the Jesuit martyrs and their women companions in 2006 while attending Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri.  After graduating from Rockhurst in 2007, she served as a Jesuit Volunteer in Syracuse and worked with American and refugee youth in an after school program.  She then received her Masters in Social Justice from Loyola University Chicago, and now works as an Urban Plunge Coordinator at Casa Romero Center.   She lives in Milwaukee, WI with her husband and two beagles and enjoys photography, reading, and roller derby.

Falling in Love in El Salvador: the Jesuit Martyrs of the UCA

Inspired by their call as Jesuits, six priests allowed their love for the people of El Salvador to infiltrate all aspects of their lives.  They dedicated themselves to changing political, economic, and social injustices in El Salvador and were killed for their commitment along with their housekeeper and her daughter on November 16, 1989.  These Jesuits were ordinary men who were called to make an extraordinary sacrifice.  We invite you to learn more about who the Jesuits were through the portraits painted by Mary Pimmel-Freeman.  She will speak about the martyrs' work, how their lives are depicted in her art, and how these martyrs impacted her own spirituality.   On the 25th anniversary of the deaths of the Salvadoran martyrs, we reflect on the legacy of the Jesuit martyrs and how we as ordinary people can follow their example.

A Day in the Life: Cura Personalis

We're looking for 100 Rockhurst Hawks to show us a

Day in the Life: Cura Personalis.

We simply need you to take a short video of  living/experiencing/extending Cura Personalis on Wednesday, November 19th.  Capture how you care for yourself and other's physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual needs (studying, resting, eating, playing, listening, Loose Park, Mass, etc.), then send the video to student extraordinaire Molly McCune or bring your video on a thumb drive to Bill Kriege's office.  Molly will compile them all into a glossy video for the whole world to enjoy.

Check this out to get the idea of it all.

Contact Molly ASAP to sign up!

Spanish Mass

On November 20th at 4pm, Fr. Raul Navarro, SJ will celebrate a Mass in Spanish in the Mabee Chapel.  We hope to see you there!

A Prayer

Let the rain come and wash away

the ancient grudges, the bitter hatreds

held and nurtured over generations.

Let the rain wash away the memory

of the hurt, the neglect.

Then let the sun come out and

fill the sky with rainbows.

Let the warmth of the sun heal us

wherever we are broken.

Let it burn away the fog so that

we can see each other clearly.

So that we can see beyond labels,

beyond accents, gender or skin color.

Let the warmth and brightness

of the sun melt our selfishness.

So that we can share the joys and

feel the sorrows of our neighbors.

And let the light of the sun

be so strong that we will see all

people as our neighbors.

Let the earth, nourished by rain,

bring forth flowers

to surround us with beauty.

And let the mountains teach our hearts

to reach upward to heaven.

Amen.
