Mary Schletzbaum, a May 2013 Rockhurst University graduate,
is currently in Tanzania serving as a Jesuit Volunteer at Saint Peter Claver High School. This Jesuit school is excited to begin its fourth year, though
construction of the campus continues as the school grows; many unfinished projects await funding. One such project is the bathroom. Right now there are not enough toilets to even begin to accommodate the 600+ students and teachers that are on campus. Adding to this problem is the issue of frequent flooding in the current bathrooms when they are overused or when there is a heavy rain that washes the septic back up through the floor. The dream is to install flush toilets (an upgrade from the manual-flush ceramic drop toilets currently in use) and a much improved, more hygienic and environmentally-friendly septic system.
Estimated Project Cost: $2500.

The following is an excerpt from Rainer Maria Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet, a collection of letters between the well-known poet and a young man aspiring to be the same. We hope that the excerpt resonates with all but particularly include it for those of you returning from service trips or discerning life post-graduation. Our deep desire is that you allow yourself to fully wrestle with the realities you experienced and, in so doing, that you allow them to inform who and how you are in the world as life unfolds. Please know that our hearts and our doors are open to accompany you in this process as helpful; don't hesitate to stop by. You are perpetually in our prayers.
. . . [H]ave patience with everything unresolved in your heart and . . . try to love the questions themselves as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language. Don't search for the answers, which could not be given to you now, because you would not be able to live them. And the point is to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer.
