Margaret O'Connor
Cerner Corporation

For Margaret O'Connor, accounting was not her first choice. She knew she was interested in business, but it was not until sophomore year in her first accounting class that she knew this was the path for her. "It's more exciting than people think. It's not just about numbers, it's also about strategy."

Instead of searching for an internship, Cerner had contacted her from the RU Career Account. This is an online career database that allows employers to post internships and full-time positions for Rockhurst students and alumni.

Human Resources may not have been directly related to her major, but Margaret knew it was an opportunity too good to pass up. She had experience with customer service in the past, and after all, she enjoyed problem solving and assisting others with their needs.

The most valuable take-away according to Margaret has been learning how to work in the professional world. This includes how to talk to your boss, how to perform daily operations and how organizations function in general.

Even if you are not comfortable with it at first, she gives the advice to share your thoughts if you have something to add in a meeting or in a conversation. "Everyone is working towards a common goal, even if you are just an intern."
