From Dr. Michele...

2012-2013 School Photo 'Tis the Season of Giving
I was just reading one of my favorite magazines and it stated that many find themselves in the holiday spirit in the month of December.  They enjoy the combination of family, festivities and the overall sense of goodwill toward all...as well as the impending end-of-year deadline to make contributions and are most likely to pull out their checkbooks and donate to a charity.

In fact, the Network for Good (a web-based giving service) states that 1/3 of all online giving is contributed in December.

The article suggested 5 questions to ask before you donate.

1.  What do I know about the charity's mission?

The Child's Voice mission is to empower children with hearing loss to be successful in all educational and social settings by optimizing their listening, speaking and academic skills.

2.  Does the charity have a verified non-profit status?

Child's Voice is recognized by the IRS as a non-profit entity and 501(c)3 organization.

3.  What is the charity's spending ratio?

Child's Voice spending ratio is 84%, which goes directly to the programs and services helping children with hearing loss.  The general standard is to have at least 75% of funds received directly programming.

4.  Are there accountability and transparency practices?

The Board of Directors meets regularly and a full list of members is available - see who is making the decisions about Child's Voice programs and policies.

5.  How are the results?

Aside from the amazing graduates that move on from Child's Voice each year, the Annual Report is available as are other financial documents such as the 990 annual statement and audited financial reports.

To find out more detailed answers to these questions for Child's Voice - please visit the Child's Voice Web site.  All these answers and much more are available here.

So please, enjoy the season, enjoy your family, do your research and choose Child's Voice as your charity this year to receive your support.   Make a gift now!

Happy Holidays!

Getting to Know...
Child's Voice Leadership

Wendy Deters, M.S.

CCC/SLP, LSLS Cert. AVEd

Child's Voice is proud to have Wendy Deters as the Coordinator of the Early Intervention Program. Wendy has been part of the Child's Voice family for six years and is responsible for overseeing the Program and the amazing EI staff. She also provides evaluations and therapy services to a small number children and their families, which she truly enjoys.

Wendy studied at the University of Iowa for her undergraduate degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders and Rush University for her Master's degree in speech language pathology. Wendy received her LSLS Cert. AVEd last year, recognizing her superior knowledge of listening and spoken language education. She is a member of the Alexander Graham Bell Association Executive Board of Directors.

Wendy's passion and interest in hearing loss began at an early age as she was raised by two amazing parents, both with a hearing loss.

Her dedication to children and supporting their families is evident in her work each day.

Outside of Child's Voice, Wendy has many passions, When not running marathons, Wendy enjoys spending time with family and friends, cooking, reading, traveling, running (again?!) and snuggling her French bulldog, Roxy.

A big congratulations to Wendy and her husband Rob as they await the arrival of Baby Deters, due at the end of January. Wendy will return in April following her maternity leave.

Thank you so much to Wendy for her fantastic leadership of the Early Intervention team and her dedication to the success of all our kiddos with hearing loss.
