Child's Voice E-Newsletter
November 2012

Greetings!
Thank you for your time to read this month's e-newsletter! Please be sure to send any feedback or suggestions to our team by email
Thank you.  In this season of giving and gratitude, all of us at Child's Voice would like to thank you for your generous support this year.  You make a difference in the life of a child.  You may be a parent of a current student or an alumnus/a, you may be a friend of a parent or a community member or perhaps a generous supporter.  We have heard from all of you in some way and we thank you.  Each of you has made an impact.

At Child's Voice we are fortunate to benefit from a generous matching grant this year.  Each dollar raised will be matched by this family foundation.  That means that for your $50 gift, $100 worth of supplies could be bought to provide science curriculum, or materials and books for the Lending Library.  For your $250 donation, $500 could provide field trips, music class materials or arts & crafts supplies.

Please watch your mailboxes.  At the end of this month, our annual fall request for support will be mailing out to many of your homes.  We appreciate your support where you are able.  Each donation allows us to further our mission and our efforts to provide listening and spoken language skills to our students.  We know we'll hear great things from them in their future, thank you for helping us to get them to those dreams.

Greatness at the Gala!
Congratulations to the Child's Voice Autumn Gala committee for their hard work and great results; to the sponsors of the evening; to the many generous attendees; to the thoughtful and kind donors of items and prizes and to the tireless volunteers.  All these pieces combined to result in a wonderfully successful evening, raising over $60,000 for Child's Voice!

Guests of the Autumn Gala were treated to the sweet sounds of both the Archbold Duo and Seven Day Run.  Festivities included the Remote Chance Raffle, Pumpkin Patch Pull and even the Heads & Tails Game!  The elegant affair was held at Bobak's Signature Events at Seven Bridges in Woodridge.

Thank you again to all who participated this year - we look forward to seeing you next year!

Many thanks to the Ryan Briere Foundation!  Founders Lori and Frederick Briere stopped by this month to present a check for the funds raised through Ryan's Run 5K in September.  These funds will support the Audiology Center and purchase of loaner hearing aids for kiddos! Thank you!

Don't forget - the Onion Pub & Brewery is partnering with Child's Voice for a Dine & Share.  On Weds., November 28 and Weds., December 12 (with a coupon) 10% of food and beverage sales will be donated to Child's Voice!! Coupons will be available on the Child's Voice website, by email and by CLICKING HERE.  The Onion Pub & Brewery is located at 22221 N. Getting to Know...
Child's Voice Leadership

Dr. Dawn Violetto, Director of Audiology

A big part of the success our students and alumni achieve is the excellent support provided by the Audiology Center, managed and operated by Dr. Dawn Violetto.

"This is the best job I have ever had and I am working exactly with the population I am supposed to," shared Dr. Dawn.

We couldn't agree more!  Dr. Dawn does a great job providing audiological support to all Child's Voice programs as well as full Audiology services to current and alumni students.  These services include evaluation and diagnostic testing, as well as troubleshooting and maintenance of devices.  Dr. Dawn also provides complete audiological care to families that have transferred audiology services to Child's Voice.

New this winter, the Audiology Center is expanding its services with the PEHDI (Pediatric Early Hearing Detection Intervention) Program, which will provide diagnostic hearing assessment via Auditory Brainstem Response Testing (ABR) to babies that did not pass their newborn hearing screenings.

Dr. Dawn joined Child's Voice in 2008, but was aware of the school for years. She attended Waubonsee Community College, where she completed an Associate's degree and Northern Illinois University for her undergraduate work and her Master's degree in Audiology. Dr. Dawn also attended AT Still University and Arizona School of Health Sciences for her Clinical Doctorate in Audiology. However, she received her early education "across the pond." Dr. Dawn was born in Great Britain and moved to the United States in 1986. Dr. Dawn has worked previously with local ENT groups and Phonak Hearing Systems, where she gained a vast knowledge of hearing aids and FM systems, skills she uses every day!

Dawn loves playing and watching tennis, biking, walking, practicing yoga, gardening and cooking. She enjoys movies, but don't try to show her a chick-flick! She prefers sci-fi and action films!  One thing you may not know...Dr. Dawn is a black belt in Tong Soo Do (Karate).

Dawn and Derek, her husband, live in North Aurora with their daughter, Mckay (who is a sophomore in college) and their three cats, Minnie, Thumper and Ginger.

Thank you Dawn for all that you and the Audiology Center at Child's Voice provides to our students, alumni and families.

We, at Child's Voice, know how important our constituents are to the health of our programs. We could not provide the excellent services without the continued support of our families, school districts, state agencies, donors and individuals - you!  What is equally important to note is the complex ways non-profits influence the economy.

According to The Rebecca Gordon Group (that has compiled information from Forbes, the Giving USA report, and the Chronicle of Philanthropy) the non-profit sector has been growing steadily, both in size and financial impact for more the a decade.

This is what they found: after two consecutive years of drops in charitable giving 2008 & 2009, giving is once again on the rise. Giving is expected to increase to $360 billion in 2012. One reason is the increase in mobile and online donations. They state that funding came from (in 2011):
  • 75% - Individuals,
  • 13% - Foundations,
  • 7% - Bequests and
  • 5% - Corporations.
One last interesting note is how great the impact of the non-profit sector has been on employment. From 2000-2010, non-profit employment has increased at a higher rate than for-profit employment. In fact, the non-profit sector generates more employment then industries such as real estate, finance and insurance or construction.

Please read our annual report (see link above) and check out how you have helped Child's Voice to grow.  Please keep us your charity of choice!

Winter Wonders at the
Winter Festival
Szymon Gluc - IT Consultant at work - Nov 2012
Child's Voice is a family; not just of students and parents, but also made up of our teachers, teaching assistants, staff and more. One fun way that Child's Voice celebrates this family is at the annual Winter Festival that will be held on Friday, December 21st.

An exciting addition this year to the Winter Festival will be the unveiling of a new musical sculpture!  This sculpture is the work of our very own IT consultant, Szymon Gluc.  Szymon is employed by SolAras, our long time technology and IT consulting firm.

"This is so great and it's just so cool," stated Principal Wendy Adler.  "The kids are going to love it and this really showcases how Child's Voice all works together.  An IT consultant chose to do something for the kids...that's amazing."

A junior at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Szymon is working toward a degree in Industrial Design within the School of Architecture, Art and Design.  A critical piece of his sculpture class is this project, which needed to be site specific.  When the opportunity came up, Szymon thought of Child's Voice right away.

"I wanted to give the kids something that would allow them to create music, to experience the sounds in a hand-on way and engage all their senses, especially sound, but also through sight and touch," shared Szymon.

This sculpture will do just that.  Through the use of PVC pipe, metal pipes, a bell and even a gong, children will have the opportunity to play and make music in a new and innovative way.

We hope you will join us on Friday, December 21st at 10:00 a.m. to see the Winter Festival, but also to see the new sculpture at Child's Voice.  Thank you Szymon and good luck with the rest of your semester!

Some great ideas and tips from our staff.

Remember
Mother Goose?
Nursery Rhymes are a great way to introduce rhyming words, which is a necessary skill in learning to read. They also exercise auditory memory skills, introduce new vocabulary, help children gain phonemic awareness skills and they are fun!

Read a nursery rhyme a week and help your child memorize the lyrics.

You can even act it out in order to reinforce their comprehension of the rhyme.
